Open Source Sub-Micrometer 3D Motion Control Platform
A low-cost, motorized XYZ micro-manipulator designed for high-precision optical and electronic applications.
1Open Source Motion Platform
The Open Micro-Manipulator is an accessible, motorized XYZ motion control system achieving sub-micrometer precision. Designed for optical alignment, microscopy, and electronic probing, it utilizes a parallel kinematic structure. The project provides comprehensive documentation, firmware, and CAD files to enable users to build high-precision hardware without expensive proprietary industrial equipment.
2Mechanical Design and Kinematics
The device achieves mechanical stiffness through miniature ball joints and a parallel kinematic arrangement. A magnetic gearing approach enhances the resolution of low-cost rotary encoders by a factor of 30, enabling steps down to 50nm. While resolution is high, users should distinguish this from absolute accuracy, which remains significantly lower.
3Firmware and Motion Control
The system runs on a 30 kHz closed-loop controller using precise PWM signals. The firmware includes a motion planning stack with look-ahead capabilities for smooth path following. Recent updates in version 1.0.4 introduced tool support via GPIO pins, improved calibration error reporting, and refined kinematic model parameters for hardware versions.
4Software and API Integration
Control is managed via G-Code commands over a USB serial interface, facilitating easy integration into external projects. A Python GUI and API are provided to handle serial communication, device homing, and calibration. The API allows users to execute move commands, query device status, and manage real-time camera feeds for biological applications.
5Hardware Fabrication and Assembly
CAD models are developed in FreeCAD, ensuring accessibility without paid software licenses. Components are designed for 3-Axis CNC milling, though 3D printing is possible with thermal drift considerations. The electronics use KiCAD, requiring no SMD soldering, and the board is powered by 5V-6V at 2A to manage heat effectively.
6Calibration and Homing Procedures
The latest firmware update enhances homing repeatability and geometric reference accuracy. Joint calibration is now more refined, with persistent flash storage ensuring settings remain after reboots. Users must verify arm lengths against the kinematic_model_delta3d.cpp file and ensure correct hardware version parameters are defined to avoid operational errors during startup.
7G-Code Command Set
The platform supports a specific subset of G-Code, including G28 for parallel homing and G24 for direct pose setting. Commands like M51 and M57 allow reading encoder values and device state information. Communication requires waiting for an acknowledgment after each command to ensure stable and predictable motion controller behavior.
8Future Development Potential
The project architecture supports true 6DOF-Pose interpolation, positioning it for potential expansion into hexapod motion platforms. By utilizing common modules and open-source standards, the platform serves as a foundation for advanced robotics. Ongoing community support via Discord and regular firmware refinements continue to improve the device's reliability and functional scope.
