Reddit Dominates 83.9% of Google's Discussion Forum Results
New study reveals Reddit's overwhelming presence in Google's discussion forum search results.
1Reddit's forum dominance
Reddit appears in 83.9% of Google's Discussions and Forums search results worldwide, with an average inclusion rate of 89.3% over the past two years. The platform was most prevalent in 34 countries, ranking highly even in markets like India and South Africa where it placed second. Early August 2026 data shows Reddit's presence growing to 86.1% of results, maintaining its position as the undisputed leader in forum-based search visibility.
2Big three control results
Just three sites - Reddit, Facebook, and Quora - account for 76.75% of all Discussion and Forums link appearances globally. The top 10 domains represent 84.87% of links, while the top 100 account for 91.51%. Domains ranked 501-1000 contribute only 1.49% of visibility, showing how concentrated this search feature is among a handful of established platforms.
3Facebook's surprising growth
Facebook appears in 38.3% of Discussions and Forums results globally, with public Groups driving all appearances. The platform became the most prominent domain in 4 countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Samoa) and second in 23 others including the US and UK. Top 10 Facebook Groups accounted for 2.82% of placements, with the platform only overtaking Quora in search prevalence in January 2026.
4Quora's specialized presence
Quora ranks as the third most prominent site, appearing in 8.22 million search results. Its content spans from plastic surgery costs to Gmail features, with three of its top four threads discussing online movie viewing. The platform's AI Assistant, launched in early 2023, provides many top answers. However, some threads suffer from off-topic or self-promotional content, highlighting moderation challenges common to community platforms.
5Domain age insights
The average age of top-ranking domains is 21 years 8 months, with the youngest being guitar community The Gear Forum at just under 4 years old. XDAforums.com technically ranks as most recently registered at under 3 years, though it's a redirect from an older forum. Registration dates weren't available for .com.au domains, with 984 of the top 1000 domains having verifiable age data.
6Geographic distribution
The Discussions and Forums feature appears most frequently in the US (11.7% of SERPs) and Canada (10.7%). While analyzed across dozens of countries, the feature didn't appear in all markets. Among countries with at least 10,000 query appearances, the US showed the highest prevalence, with Reddit dominating most English-speaking markets.
7Search intent patterns
98.7% of Discussions and Forums appearances serve informational intent queries, with 40.9% having commercial intent and just 0.6% navigational intent. The feature scales with query length - appearing in 0.3% of one-word searches but becoming three times more likely for eight-word queries. 43.2% of appearances are for queries with 5+ words.
8URL concentration
27 of the top 1,000 domains rely on a single URL for 10%+ of their SERP feature presence. A health question on Gleneagles Hospital's site accounts for 67% of its appearances, while a 2020 post with no replies makes up 30% of skill.jobs' presence. 768 domains depend on one URL for at least 1% of visibility, showing how specific content can disproportionately drive traffic.
9Domain authority metrics
The average Domain Rating (DR) among top 1,000 domains is 58.3, with the top 100 averaging 78 DR and bottom 100 averaging 48. While there's moderate correlation (ρ=0.38) between prominence and DR, it's driven mainly by top performers - the bottom half mixes domains with DRs from 10 to 90+. URL Rating showed no correlation with rankings for specific discussions.
10Subreddit specifics
Among top 100 subreddits appearing in search results, the average community age is 16 years 1 month. The youngest is r/ScienceBasedParenting (8 years old), while r/backpain has fewest members (81,027) and r/wichita fewest weekly visitors (42,000). No surprising newcomers broke into the top 100, showing established communities dominate even in niche topics.
11Actionable insights
Marketers should use tools like Ahrefs Keywords Explorer to identify relevant subreddits, groups and niche forums in their industry. The Reddit-in-SERP index in Brand Radar can track mentions without a subscription. Rather than self-promotion, brands should learn community etiquette and engage authentically where discussions about their products already occur organically.
