1Cloud-Free Coding Assistant

Junie Local enables developers to run coding processes entirely on their local machines. The specially optimized Qwen3.6-27B model installs with a single command. No code ever leaves the device and requires no credits/quota. Designed for M5 Macs with 64GB RAM, it's an ideal solution for projects under NDA, offering complete privacy and offline functionality.

2Technical Specifications

The system uses a 4-bit quantized 20GB Qwen3.6-27B model. Leveraging Apple M5 Neural Accelerator's 8-bit instructions provides 40% faster prefill. The model ships with reasoning disabled as tests showed minimal quality improvement but 2-3x higher token consumption. In JetBrains' benchmarks, it performs close to GPT-5 medium level while being completely local and private.

3Performance Optimizations

The team focused on prefill time rather than generation speed for coding agents. KV-cache reuse and speculative decoding techniques doubled generation speed. They chose Qwen3.6 over 3.8 because the newer version runs 4x slower with reasoning enabled. On current Macs, 3.6 delivers better efficiency. These optimizations will be submitted as PRs to MLX-VLM.

4Use Cases

Junie Local excels at mechanical tasks often postponed: multi-file refactoring, test coverage improvement, dependency upgrades, and framework migrations. Without credit costs, developers can now automate repetitive work they previously avoided. The offline capability makes it usable in airplanes or other disconnected environments, expanding development possibilities.

5Privacy Advantages

Junie Local eliminates data policy concerns as no data leaves your machine. For projects under client NDAs, it shifts from 'vendor assessment' to 'no vendor involvement'. Particularly valuable for developers in finance and healthcare sectors, it creates a critical security layer. After downloading model weights, everything runs in complete isolation.

6Hardware Requirements

Currently requires M5-chip Macs with 64GB RAM - necessary for efficient 27B model operation. The team is working to reduce memory footprint and support wider hardware. Prototypes for DGX Spark and RTX 5090 are in development. Optimization for 24GB GPUs is underway, addressing different prefill behaviors on discrete graphics cards.

7Cost Benefits

Junie Local is completely free - no registration, subscription or credit card needed. Developers can avoid spending thousands on cloud credits for complex refactoring tasks. Particularly beneficial for startups and individual developers, it reduces cloud costs to zero. The team prioritizes optimizations for lower-spec hardware in future updates.

8Future Roadmap

Currently MacOS-focused, the team is developing prototypes for DGX Spark and RTX 5090. Optimizations for 24GB GPUs are in progress. Different prefill behaviors on discrete GPUs require hardware-specific tuning. New platforms will be added based on user feedback. This marks just the first step in Junie's local AI journey, with broader hardware support coming.
