Apple Faces Margin Pressure From Unprecedented Memory Component Price Hikes

Record-breaking Mac sales growth faces supply chain headwinds due to rising memory costs.

1Record Fiscal Performance

Apple achieved its highest Mac sales volume in history during fiscal 2026. Revenue from the Mac segment reached 10.8 billion dollars in the September quarter, marking a 24 percent year-on-year increase. This follows a strong June quarter where revenue grew by nearly 29 percent, driven largely by MacBook Neo and Pro models.

2Unprecedented Memory Costs

CEO John Ternus identified soaring memory pricing as an unprecedented challenge for the company. While Apple previously mitigated cost pressures through hardware price hikes in June and September, these measures are no longer sufficient. The company expects memory costs to climb further throughout the December quarter and into the following year.

3Supply Chain Constraints

COO Sabih Khan confirmed that supply limitations are affecting iPhone, Mac, and iPad availability. While advanced chipmaking capacity previously caused bottlenecks, memory shortages are now the primary constraint. Higher-than-expected consumer demand has exacerbated these shortages, forcing Apple to navigate significant inventory challenges to keep products on retail shelves globally.

4Strategic Purchase Obligations

To secure necessary supplies, Apple significantly increased its manufacturing purchase obligations. Between June and September, these commitments jumped by 33 billion dollars. Despite this aggressive capital allocation to lock in component availability, leadership has not provided a specific timeline for when the current memory market crunch might eventually ease.

5Margin Compression Impact

CFO Kevan Parekh reported that gross margins declined by approximately one percentage point between the June and September quarters due to memory costs. Excluding tariff effects, the company expects further margin contraction from 47.9 percent in September to between 45 and 46 percent for the December quarter, compounded by Siri AI rollout expenses.

6Hardware Pricing Strategy

Apple has reluctantly implemented price increases across its hardware lineup to offset rising component costs. Management noted that it remains too early to fully assess how these price adjustments are influencing consumer behavior. The company relies on existing inventory and cheaper non-memory components to soften the overall financial impact on its bottom line.

7AI-Driven Hardware Push

Apple is positioning the Mac as a premier machine for local, private AI workloads. CEO John Ternus highlighted the Mac mini and Mac Studio as devices pushing boundaries for local processing. With the introduction of M6-powered machines and touchscreen MacBook Pro models, the company aims to sustain upgrade momentum despite the supply hurdles.

8Overall Revenue Outlook

Despite supply constraints, Apple reported total September-quarter revenue of 114.5 billion dollars, a 12 percent year-on-year increase. iPhone revenue grew 17 percent to 57.6 billion dollars, while services contributed 31.6 billion dollars. The company forecasts overall revenue growth of 7 to 10 percent for the December quarter, maintaining confidence despite component headwinds.
