ALIT Lamp: Harmonious Dance of Ceramic, Wood and Light

Seoul-based designer Byunggwon Na's minimalist lighting piece explores material interactions

1Dialogue of Materials

Seoul-based designer Byunggwon Na examines the relationship between ceramic, wood, and light with the ALIT lamp. By exploring translucent ceramic properties, he analyzed how light passes through, reflects off, and diffuses across the material surface. The project incorporates only one additional element - a square wooden column. The result is a minimalist form where the curved ceramic shade sits directly atop the wooden base, creating a seamless material transition.

2Geometry Meets Organic Form

The ceramic shade, produced through slip casting, originates conceptually from a circular plane folded into four quadrants. This folding process creates four gently curved surfaces around its perimeter. Na likens its silhouette to a maple seed or leaf drifting downward. The shade isn't permanently fixed and can be removed, replaced, or exchanged with other versions, offering flexibility in design expression and functionality.

3Color Transforms Light

Na conducted color experiments by mixing pigments directly into the liquid slip before casting. This technique produced ceramic shades with color permeating throughout the material rather than being surface-applied through glazing. While lighter versions allow light transmission, pigmented pieces become opaque, fundamentally altering light distribution. Colored shades emit softer pools of light from beneath, interacting with the wood grain instead of glowing from within.

4Versatile Functionality

The ALIT lamp offers multifunctional use thanks to its removable shade. The ceramic piece can serve as an independent object or tray beyond illumination. The wooden column maintains functionality without the shade, requiring no complex assembly. This modular design allows each component to exist independently while creating new possibilities when combined. The thoughtful engineering enables transformation without complicated mechanisms.

5Material Selection Rationale

The designer deliberately chose the ceramic-wood combination for their complementary properties. Ceramic excels at soft light diffusion while the wooden column provides sturdy geometric balance. The meeting point between materials becomes the design's focal point - a material dialogue between the solid, rectilinear base below and the thinner, lighter, more fluid element above. This juxtaposition defines the lamp's essential character.

6Production Process

ALIT's ceramic shade takes shape through traditional slip casting. The designer first explored forms through paper prototypes, testing how the shade would sit on the wooden column. The final form derives from a circular plane folded into four quadrants. Liquid ceramic slip is poured into molds, then removed and prepared before firing. This meticulous process ensures precise production of each shade while maintaining handmade qualities.

7Light as Third Material

ALIT elevates illumination from mere functionality to become the composition's third material. Light transforms based on what sits atop the column - glowing through transparent shades or casting softer reflections with opaque versions. This approach positions light as a dynamic design element rather than static utility. The lamp demonstrates how illumination can actively participate in material conversations, changing character with different configurations.

8Power of Minimalism

Byunggwon Na's ALIT lamp exemplifies how to communicate much with little. Using only two primary materials and basic geometries, it establishes profound material dialogue. Beyond noisy aesthetic pursuits, the design offers a quiet yet powerful composition. ALIT invites us to reconsider our relationship with everyday objects, standing out as a simple yet sophisticated design object that celebrates material essence through restraint and precision.
