Modular steel home redefines family living in tight urban space

Prefabricated structure in Taiwan adapts to evolving family dynamics

1Innovative solution for constrained site

MOM House was built on a narrow plot surrounded by neighboring buildings in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Designed for a retired mother and her adult children, the home uses prefabricated steel modules for rapid assembly. Eight steel modules are arranged along a linear axis to maximize space efficiency. Its orientation towards a neighboring school's sports field provides natural light and visual openness in an otherwise dense urban context.

2Expandable structural framework

The design team developed an extensible steel grid system using repetitive modules. A deliberately irregular bay directs rainwater drainage to the garden while serving as a connection point for future expansions. Environmental infrastructure is fully integrated into the structural framework. This approach significantly simplifies fabrication and on-site assembly processes compared to conventional construction methods.

3Layered living spaces

The ground floor accommodates the mother's daily routines while upper levels contain guest rooms for visiting children. A shared family lounge and terrace face the sports field. The vertical organization successfully incorporates both private and communal areas within the compact 80m² footprint. An internal garden provides shared outdoor space for family members and their dogs.

4Dynamic aluminum facade

The building envelope features matte-finished aluminum panels. The modular facade system aligns with the structural grid. The panels' lightly reflective surfaces create dynamic interactions with daylight and surrounding vegetation. This system allows individual panel replacement in the future. The facade design establishes visual dialogue with its urban context.

5Adapting to family dynamics

The design balances the mother's fixed living spaces with flexible accommodation for her children. Upper-level windows and skylights maximize limited natural light. Vertical circulation accommodates various usage scenarios. This approach ensures the home can adapt to the family's evolving needs over time.

6Prefabrication advantages

The lightweight steel structure offers significant advantages over traditional construction on this tight, hard-to-access site. Assembly time was reduced while minimizing the family's temporary relocation needs. The modular system reduces construction waste by up to 60%. Compared to concrete, the 40% lighter steel structure significantly reduces foundation loads.

7Environmental integration

The design creates strategic visual connections to the sports field within the enclosed urban fabric. The upper terrace and family lounge optimize this opening. The internal garden mediates between building and landscape. Material selection prioritized durability and low maintenance requirements.

8Future-oriented design philosophy

MOM House treats adaptability as a fundamental design parameter. The expandable steel chassis carries potential to meet the family's future needs. The modular system allows spatial reconfiguration. This approach offers a holistic design philosophy that goes beyond sustainable architecture to target long-term user satisfaction.
