Reddit is Turning Posts into Podcasts and Short Videos
AI voices bring Reddit content to a new form.
1Reddit's New Experiment
Reddit has launched a new experiment to modernize how users consume content. Some text posts and comments are being converted into videos using AI voices. In these videos, the text is highlighted as it is read by AI voices. The experiment is currently active on the web and will soon roll out to iOS and Android.
2Example Application
Reddit's AI technology transformed an eight-year-old r/boardgames post into a three-minute video. The post contained recommendations for good road trip games for adults. The video features AI voices reading the responses. Users can choose to read the post as text or watch it as a video.
3Goal and Purpose
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated that the goal of this experiment is to allow users to listen to posts in the background. Huffman emphasized that Reddit content read by AI voices 'can be really engaging.' This is part of Reddit's efforts to reshape content consumption.
4Scope of the Experiment
Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim said the experiment is currently launched in a limited capacity to understand how useful users find these formats. The experiment will start with selected existing posts and will be expanded to more posts over time.
5Potential Issues
Videos created with AI voices may offer an easier consumption method for users unfamiliar with internet forums. However, potential issues such as mispronunciations or incorrect comments being cited could arise. Reddit is manually selecting posts to minimize such problems.
6Future Plans
Reddit plans to expand this experiment and convert more posts into videos. The company aims for users to adopt this new format and change their content consumption habits. This could be a significant step in Reddit's video-based content strategy.
7User Reactions
User reactions to the experiment's launch are eagerly awaited. It remains to be seen how videos created with AI voices will affect Reddit's traditional text-based format. User adoption of this new format could shape Reddit's future strategies.
8Significance and Impacts
Reddit's experiment is a significant example of how AI technology can transform content consumption. If successful, this format could serve as a model for other platforms. Reddit aims to open a new era in content consumption with this step.
