Joe Flacco's Family Home: Function Over Flash
Inside the NFL star's minimalist 10,000 sq ft home designed for his family of seven.
1Minimalist Design for a Large Family
NFL quarterback Joe Flacco and his wife Dana built a 10,000 sq ft 'forever home' on 3.5 acres near Philadelphia. Design firm Bergman Vass and architects Asher Slaunwhite + Partners focused on the needs of their active family with five children. Functional spaces like the kitchen, pantry, homework room, and mudroom take center stage. The minimalist aesthetic combines with durable materials throughout the home to withstand heavy family use.
2The Essential Mudroom for a Sports Family
The home's main entrance opens directly into a mudroom designed for efficiency. It includes laundry facilities, individual lockers with metal-mesh doors for each child, and dedicated storage for sports equipment. Designers explain, "Kids can drop their backpacks and toss dirty clothes straight into the washer upon arriving home." This space streamlines the daily routine for the sports-loving family, with everything having its designated place.
3Durable Material Selection
The design team prioritized materials that could withstand heavy use by children. Choices included naturally stain-resistant wool rugs, wipeable surfaces, and performance fabrics. Without sacrificing style, they incorporated vinyl wallpaper mimicking grasscloth and replaceable mohair throw pillows. Stone and millwork selections also emphasized durability while maintaining a refined aesthetic throughout the spacious home.
4Homework Central and Functional Kitchen
The first stop off the main hallway is a homework room featuring individual desks and a central table. Directly across sits a working pantry nearly the size of the main kitchen, complete with snack cubbies for children to grab food while studying. This strategic placement of key functional areas optimizes the family's daily flow, keeping essential activities closely connected.
5Bedroom Layout Fosters Togetherness
Despite the home's size, the Flaccos wanted to maintain family connection. Their daughter's bedroom sits across from the primary suite, while their four sons share two bedrooms in a separate wing connected by a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. This wing leads to a wellness room and ultimately the sports court. Designers noted the couple specifically requested shared rooms "to foster a sense of togetherness" among the brothers.
6Sports Court and Privacy Balance
"The sports court and gym were non-negotiable," the designers explained. They created ample space for Joe's workouts and children's playtime with friends. Meanwhile, the primary suite offers complete privacy with spa-like bathroom, two large closets, and a dedicated shoe vestibule for Dana. This balance between shared activity spaces and private retreats defines the home's thoughtful layout.
7Circulation Designed for Family Dynamics
Every circulation path in the home was planned around the family's daily rhythms. The designers optimized transitions between spaces based on children's school schedules, sports activities, and homework routines. The kitchen-pantry-mudroom triangle forms the heart of family operations, keeping members connected despite the home's scale. This intentional flow maintains constant interaction among family members throughout their busy days.
8Substance Over Showmanship
At 10,000 square feet, this home breaks from typical NFL star extravagance by prioritizing genuine functionality. "We developed a deep understanding of how the spaces would actually be lived in," the designers noted. The result is a durable, minimalist family home that withstands children's activity while maintaining aesthetic refinement - serving as a benchmark for large family living done right.
