Amazon ECS Gateway Released with Generated Hostnames and Limited Domain Support

New account-level ingress resource simplifies networking but lacks support for custom domain names.

1New Ingress Resource Launch

AWS introduced Amazon ECS Gateway, an account-level resource designed to streamline ingress networking for containerized workloads. Platform teams define networking configurations once, allowing application teams to attach services via a connector. The system automatically provisions necessary infrastructure, including IAM roles, subnets, security groups, and TLS certificates, directly within the user's account.

2Hostname and Domain Limitations

Each service receives a generated hostname in the format unique-id.ecs.region.on.aws. Currently, the documentation and official announcements provide no mechanism for attaching custom domain names. Because the gateway utilizes host-based routing on the load balancer, standard CNAME records are ineffective, limiting the feature's utility for production environments requiring specific branding.

3Organizational Responsibility Split

The gateway enforces a clear separation between platform and application teams. Platform engineers manage the gateway's infrastructure, including WAF web ACLs and listener settings. Application teams use CreateService or UpdateService to attach connectors. ECS then handles the provisioning of target groups and security groups, ensuring traffic is restricted to the load balancer.

4Operational Cost and Scaling

The gateway does not consolidate load balancers or migrate services to optimize capacity. It adds load balancers as demand increases but retains them even after services are removed, leading to potential billing for partially filled resources. While the gateway manages multiple ALBs automatically, it does not perform efficient packing of services.

5Technical Constraints and Limits

The system supports a maximum of twenty-five services per load balancer. With a default maxAlbCount of ten and a hard ceiling of two hundred per gateway, deployments will fail if capacity is exhausted. Furthermore, listeners are restricted to HTTPS on port 443, and services must utilize awsvpc networking within the same VPC.

6Community and Architectural Debate

Practitioners on Reddit expressed skepticism regarding the lack of custom domain support, with some labeling the feature as a wrapper around existing ALB and DNS functionality. Critics argue that L3 constructs often hide too much control, while proponents suggest it effectively reduces complexity for teams that can align with its opinionated design.

7Resource Integrity Risks

Amazon ECS does not repair or reconcile manual changes made to managed resources outside of the gateway. Modifying or deleting these resources can lead to traffic outages. Subsequent deployments, gateway updates, or cleanup operations may fail if the underlying infrastructure has been altered, requiring strict adherence to ECS-managed lifecycle processes.

8Strategic Adoption Considerations

While some users view the gateway as a viable option for new migrations or ephemeral preview environments, others find it unsuitable for existing setups due to hostname restrictions. The decision to adopt depends on whether the reduction in networking configuration complexity outweighs the loss of granular control over load balancer resources.
