# Why Have There Been So Many Record-Breaking Heat Waves This Summer? Climate change and heat domes are behind the record-breaking temperatures. - **Source:** [Scientific American Content: Global](https://brifing.si/source/4f066134-e06d-4415-87ef-305e3dc2aba6) - **Published:** 2026-07-13 - **Topic:** [Business](https://brifing.si/c/business) - **Original article:** - **On Brifing:** https://brifing.si/s/98bd7128-5a5f-4679-aaed-c6e7bcff08dc ## Record-Breaking Temperatures This summer, temperatures in the western and central U.S. reached record highs. States like Montana, Utah, and Idaho saw historic peaks. Meteorologists attribute this to a phenomenon called a 'heat dome.' ## What Is a Heat Dome? A heat dome occurs when a high-pressure area in the atmosphere traps heat. This acts like a lid on a pot, preventing the heat from escaping and keeping temperatures high even at night. ## Global Impacts It's not just the U.S.; temperatures have broken records worldwide. France recorded its hottest average temperature, and thousands died across Europe due to the heat. Similar temperatures were observed in Asia and the Middle East. ## The Role of Climate Change Climate scientists note that heat domes are not new, but climate change has made them more frequent and intense. As global temperatures rise, so does the frequency and severity of heat waves. ## Future Expectations Research indicates that more intense and widespread heat waves are expected in the future. Scientists emphasize that this is directly linked to human-induced climate change. ## Precautions and Recommendations To protect against heat waves, the World Health Organization recommends staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and checking on the elderly and disabled. Vehicles heat up quickly, so children and pets should not be left unattended inside. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-have-their-been-so-many-record-breaking-heat-waves-this-summer/ — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
