1Historic Maritime Integration

The Portuguese technology firm Tekever successfully executed the first takeoff and landing of an AR5 drone from the British Royal Navy's HMS Queen Elizabeth. This milestone occurred during the Heavy Lift Challenge 3 military exercise. The demonstration proved the unmanned system's capability to operate effectively within demanding and complex maritime environments.

2Autonomous Flight Logistics

The AR5 system launched from Tekever’s Flight Operations and Training Center in Atouguia da Baleia, Portugal. It completed a 90-minute flight to reach the aircraft carrier. After performing two successful takeoffs and landings on the deck, the drone returned to its Portuguese base following a flight duration of approximately 120 minutes.

3Enhancing Naval ISTAR Capabilities

This operation aimed to demonstrate how fixed-wing unmanned systems can strengthen logistics, surveillance, target detection, and reconnaissance, collectively known as ISTAR. By integrating the AR5 with other systems within the carrier strike group, the exercise provided essential data on how autonomous technology can support broader maintenance and operational tasks at sea.

4Strategic Defense Collaboration

The trial involved collaboration between the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and various industry partners. Captain-Lieutenant David Burton noted that the success provided valuable insights into integrating future ISTAR and logistical capabilities into a more coherent system. This highlights the growing synergy between private tech developers and national defense forces.

5Expanding UK Defense Footprint

Tekever is currently scaling its presence in the United Kingdom through the OVERMATCH program, a five-year, 400-million-pound investment in defense research and infrastructure. The company now employs over 300 people across several British locations, including London, Bristol, and Southampton, solidifying its role as a key supplier for the British Ministry of Defence.

6Major Procurement Contracts

In July, the UK Ministry of Defence selected Tekever to provide the next generation of surveillance drones for the British Army. This contract, part of the CORVUS project, is valued at approximately 470 million euros over the next decade. This deal underscores the firm's central position in modernizing British military hardware and surveillance.

7Inorganic Growth Strategy

Tekever continues to expand its technical capabilities through strategic acquisitions, such as the purchase of Edinburgh-based engineering firm Flowcopter in September. These moves allow the company to integrate specialized expertise into its existing portfolio. Such acquisitions are critical for maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving global unmanned aerial vehicle market.

8Future Naval Warfare Outlook

Beyond carrier operations, Tekever is advancing its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. During the REPMUS exercise, the company collaborated with General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada to successfully detect underwater targets. These developments signal a shift toward highly autonomous, multi-domain naval operations, where drones provide the flexibility required to meet modern, evolving maritime security demands.
