Porfirio Building: Urban Density and Identity in Mexico
ViGa Arquitectos' Porfirio project aims to densify while preserving urban fabric identity.
1Project's Core Philosophy
The Porfirio building is based on the idea of maintaining identity while densifying consolidated cities. Located in Mexico City's Noche Buena neighborhood, the project considers not only environmental values but also the material memory rooted in the area's clay extraction history. The design team aims to create a structure that harmonizes with the urban fabric.
2Architectural Organization
The 460-square-meter project consists of two vertical volumes connected by a horizontal base. This organization integrates both residential and commercial spaces. The ground floor retail area extends public life with independent access from Porfirio Díaz Avenue, while upper floors maintain privacy without disconnecting from surroundings.
3Location and Context
The project is located less than 100 meters from Parque Hundido park. This strategic location facilitates access to green spaces while allowing the building to become part of the urban fabric. The area's clay extraction history influences the project's material choices.
4Design Team and Collaborations
Lead architects Ángela Vizcarra and Alberto García Valladares worked with a design team including Ariadna Gutiérrez, Brisa Herrera and Julio Romero. Collaborations included Patio Engineering And Consulting for landscape, Grupo SAI for structural engineering, and Grupo MEB for electrical engineering.
5Material Selections
The Porfirio building used products from brands like Cristales, Estructura Concreto, Grupo Joben and Madera general. Construction materials included concrete and brick, referencing both the area's industrial past and meeting modern durability requirements.
6Role in Urban Fabric
Designed as part of urban fabric rather than an isolated object, the Porfirio building establishes active relationships with its surroundings while combining commercial and residential functions. This approach serves as an example for sustainable development models in modern urban planning.
7Innovative Design Aspects
ViGa Arquitectos' design reinterprets traditional apartment concepts. The skillful combination of vertical and horizontal volumes creates both functional and aesthetic integrity. While aiming to improve urban living quality, the project also emphasizes architectural identity.
8Architectural Significance
Scheduled for completion in 2025, the Porfirio building represents an important contribution to Mexico City's urban transformation. This work by ViGa Arquitectos serves as a reference for creating identity-rich living spaces in dense urban centers, highlighting the importance of contextual sensitivity in modern architecture.
