ArchDaily Global2 min

1Project Scope

The second expansion phase of Hospital del Mar covers an area of 27,286 square meters. Located at the southern end of Campus Mar along Barcelona's coastline, the project faced complex terrain conditions with a single access point and a water table at 8 meters depth. The hospital remained fully operational during construction, requiring special planning considerations throughout the process.

2Design Team and Collaborations

Albert de Pineda, Raúl García, Manel Brullet, and Alfonso de Luna served as lead architects for the project. Jaume Piñol led the design team, with PGI Engineering consulting on mechanical systems and Manuel Arguijo advising on structural engineering. RQP arquitectura managed the project, while landscape architecture was designed by dosAdos Arquitectura del Paisatge S.L.

3Challenges and Innovative Solutions

The project underwent significant revisions when selected for Next Generation EU funds, shortening the delivery deadline by six months. This prompted a shift from conventional concrete structures to prefabricated solutions. This change not only accelerated construction but also maintained the hospital's operational continuity. The design specifically accommodates future health crises with its flexible infrastructure.

4Architectural Approach

The hospital expansion occupies a complex site between the seaside promenade, Ronda Litoral highway, railway tracks, and Barceloneta neighborhood. Despite challenging terrain conditions, the architects developed a design that enhances hospital functionality. The project features an evolvable building concept that can adapt to medical advancements and social changes.

5Materials and Technology

The project incorporated products from leading manufacturers including Porcelanosa Grupo, Alu-Stock, Cortizo, Gradhermetic, and Hormipresa. Using prefabricated structural elements optimized the construction process while improving structural performance. This approach serves as an important example for achieving time and cost efficiency in critical infrastructure projects like hospitals.

6Environmental Integration

The design sensitively responds to Barcelona's urban fabric and coastal characteristics. Landscape architecture solutions aim to create a peaceful environment for patients and visitors around the hospital. The building integrates harmoniously with surrounding transport infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility throughout the design.

7Healthcare Infrastructure Contribution

The Hospital del Mar expansion will significantly increase Barcelona's healthcare capacity. The project highlights the importance of flexible health systems in the post-pandemic era. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the facility is designed to easily adapt to advancements in medical technologies.

8Significance for Architecture and Healthcare

This project provides a model for expanding large-scale healthcare facilities in complex urban environments. Maintaining hospital operations during construction represents a significant achievement for the industry. As a project utilizing European Union funds, it demonstrates the potential of public-private partnerships in healthcare infrastructure investments.
