Trent Appoints Bahram Vakil as Chairman Following Noel Tata's Retirement
Retail giant transitions leadership as Noel Tata steps down after three decades of service.
1Leadership Transition at Trent
Trent Ltd has announced a significant leadership change as Noel N. Tata prepares to step down as chairman and director on November 11, 2026. Bahram Vakil, a co-founder of AZB Partners, will succeed him as chairman starting November 12. This shift marks the end of Tata's nearly thirty-year tenure with the retail company.
2Regulatory Retirement Policy
Noel Tata’s departure aligns with the Tata Group’s internal governance policy regarding non-executive directors. The policy mandates that board members must vacate their positions upon reaching the age of 70. Following his retirement, Tata will transition into the role of chairman emeritus, honoring his long-standing contribution to the firm's growth since 1997.
3New Board Appointments
Alongside the chairman transition, Trent has appointed Rajiv Dube as a non-executive, non-independent director and Kalpana Merchant as an independent director. These appointments, effective October 30, remain subject to shareholder approval. Dube brings four decades of corporate experience, while Merchant contributes over 45 years of expertise in the legal and commercial property sectors.
4Strong Financial Performance
Despite the leadership change, Trent continues to demonstrate robust financial health. In the September quarter of fiscal year 2027, consolidated revenue rose 22% year-on-year to ₹5,873 crore. Net profit also saw a significant increase of 25%, reaching ₹468 crore, meeting market estimates despite the challenging inflationary environment and shifting festive calendar demand.
5Aggressive Retail Expansion
The company is aggressively expanding its footprint, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. During the quarter, Trent opened 10 Westside stores and 19 Zudio outlets. As of September 30, the retailer operated 311 Westside and 999 Zudio stores, covering over 18.5 million square feet across 339 cities, including international locations in the UAE.
6Diversified Revenue Streams
Emerging categories such as beauty, personal care, innerwear, and footwear now contribute over 21% of total revenue. Additionally, the Star grocery business recorded growth exceeding 20%, with private labels accounting for 74% of its sales. These segments provide a diversified foundation, reducing reliance on traditional fashion retail and supporting long-term capital efficiency.
7Navigating Market Pressures
Trent faces elevated costs due to inflation and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty affecting supply chains. To maintain its value proposition, the company leverages its sourcing capabilities and supplier relationships. While like-for-like growth remained in the mid-single digits, management remains confident in its ability to navigate these pressures while maintaining a positive consumer sentiment.
8Strategic Future Outlook
Noel Tata expressed confidence in the company's future, highlighting the transformation from a fledgling entrant to a leading fashion player. The strategy moving forward focuses on strengthening lifestyle businesses, expanding the food and grocery network, and positioning Trent as a meaningful exporter of Indian brands to global markets in the coming years.
