Neutrl pauses NUSD redemptions due to reserve issues
DeFi protocol Neutrl suspends NUSD operations amid unspecified reserve concerns.
1Neutrl halts NUSD operations
DeFi protocol Neutrl has suspended minting and redemption operations for its NUSD synthetic dollar due to unspecified issues affecting its reserves. The protocol did not disclose the affected asset or counterparty, nor did it confirm whether the reserves have suffered any realized losses. Neutrl also did not provide a timeline for resuming operations.
2Strata also pauses transactions
Structured-yield protocol Strata announced it has paused minting, redemptions, and related functions for contracts in its Neutrl market, which supports various NUSD-linked products. Strata stated that its other markets remain operational. NUSD's circulating supply is approximately $53.6 million.
3Reserve status unclear
While Neutrl works to determine whether its reserves have been impaired, it has prevented approved counterparties from exchanging NUSD for its backing assets. The protocol said it would provide updates on timing and next steps. Cointelegraph reached out to Neutrl for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.
4NUSD market data
According to RWA.xyz, NUSD's market capitalization was approximately $53.6 million on August 14, marking an 18.4% decline over 30 days. Monthly transfer volume fell 72.4% to $71.4 million. However, this data does not establish a direct link between the earlier contraction and the reserve issue.
5How NUSD works
The NUSD synthetic dollar is designed to track the US dollar using yield-bearing crypto assets and market-neutral strategies instead of bank deposits. RWA.xyz showed NUSD trading at around $0.9984, with 615 holders and 347 active addresses over the past 30 days.
6BA Labs' risk assessment
Risk advisory team BA Labs classified a proposed Neutrl integration as higher risk in a February assessment due to counterparty, operational, and liquidity exposure. BA Labs estimated NUSD supply at $226 million and reserves at $233.7 million, implying a 103.6% collateralization ratio.
7Reserve distribution
BA Labs noted that over 87% of reserves were held through Fireblocks, with smaller amounts on centralized exchanges. Direct redemptions were limited to KYC or KYB-approved counterparties, and requests exceeding the liquid buffer could enter a queue targeted for completion within 48 hours, though this was not guaranteed.
8DeFi trust concerns
Neutrl's reserve issues have reignited concerns about trust and transparency in the DeFi ecosystem. There are calls for protocols to provide greater accountability in reserve management and risk disclosures. This incident highlights the need for users to exercise caution when selecting DeFi platforms.
