Floating Mountain House in Colorado by Studio B and Studio Brother John
Wildfire-rebuilt residence blends luxury with sustainable design
1Design Born from Ashes
Replacing a home lost in the 2020 Cal-Wood fire, this 4,410 sq ft mountain residence was created through collaboration between Studio B and Studio Brother John. Located in Boulder's gated Mountain Ridge community, the property borders over 6,300 acres of protected open space.
2Architecture in Harmony with Nature
Organized in three sections, the house unfolds from a central entry into north and south wings. Private spaces occupy the northern wing while communal areas fill the southern portion. The cantilevered design on steep slopes offers panoramic views of Pikes Peak and Boulder Flatirons.
3Floating Illusion
Described by architects as 'hovering over the land', the house transforms at night with Boulder's city lights. Strategically placed skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows create dynamic interiors bathed in natural light throughout the day.
4Sustainable Material Choices
Clad in low-combustible Accoya wood, the home features premium materials like Italian travertine kitchen islands and French white oak floors. Compliant with Boulder County's green building codes, the property operates on full solar power for net-zero energy consumption.
5Architectural Details
Roof forms inspired by surrounding mountains rise and fold skyward. Carefully positioned skylights allow daylight to cascade down interior walls. The minimalist interior design serves as a quiet backdrop that prioritizes the dramatic landscape views.
6Triumph of Nature-Inspired Design
This project represents a phoenix rising from wildfire ashes. In the rebuilding process, the architects successfully created a sustainable living space that respects its natural surroundings while showcasing breathtaking views. The home stands as proof that luxury and ecological sensitivity can coexist beautifully.
