Framework's most affordable laptop gets significant hardware upgrades
Framework Laptop 12 arrives with new Intel processors and enhanced features.
1Entry-Level Hardware Upgrade
Framework has updated its 12-inch laptop series with Intel's new Core Series 3 processors. The model includes significant hardware improvements like an optional backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. This update aims to offer a more accessible option compared to the original model's high price tag.
2Performance and Battery Life Boost
The new Core 5 model offers 70% better battery life during Netflix streaming compared to the original Laptop 12's Core i5 version. Features like DDR5 RAM support and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity enhance performance. Users will have RAM options ranging from 8GB to 48GB.
3Linux User Advantages
Framework notes that over 80% of original Laptop 12 owners use Linux, so the new model comes pre-installed with Fedora. Windows 11 is available for a $100 upgrade. Support for other Linux distributions is also in development.
4Flexible Configuration Options
Users can personalize the device with 4 hot-swappable Expansion Cards. While maintaining the 12.2-inch display size, optional features like a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader can be added. The DIY version comes in black, gray, light purple, pink, and green color options.
5Pricing and Pre-order Details
The pre-installed Linux configuration starts at $699, while the DIY version is priced at $549. Color options include green, black, gray, light purple, and pink. Pre-orders have begun, with shipments starting in October 2024.
6Reflection of Industry RAM Issues
The base 8GB RAM configuration is seen as a reflection of the industry-wide 'RAMaggedon' issues. Framework announced that users can upgrade to up to 48GB RAM for an additional $659.
7User Experience-Focused Design
Framework Laptop 12 offers repairability and upgradability through its modular design. The hot-swappable Expansion Cards allow users to customize connectivity ports according to their needs.
8Step Towards Sustainable Technology
This update by Framework supports long-term use and eco-friendly technology. With its modular design, the company aims to reduce electronic waste and offer consumers a more responsible consumption alternative.
