Trial Begins for Deadly Tarwekamp Apartment Explosion
Four suspects face court over a fatal arson attack targeting a bridal shop.
1Court Examines Fatal Explosion
The district court in The Hague has commenced hearings for four suspects involved in a devastating explosion at a Tarwekamp apartment complex. The incident, occurring two years ago, resulted in six fatalities. Judges are currently questioning the primary suspect, Moshtag B., alongside three alleged accomplices to clarify the events leading to the tragedy.
2Obsessive Behavior and Monitoring
Testimonies reveal that Moshtag B. became increasingly possessive and jealous following his breakup with the bridal shop owner. He reportedly cloned her phone to monitor social media messages and restricted her interactions with other men. He even forced her to undergo a lie detector test, demonstrating a pattern of extreme controlling behavior.
3Months of Planning Involved
The three accomplices, Mourad B., Ilias B., and Adil A., testified that they had been in contact with the mastermind since August. They held multiple meetings to discuss the operation, although they initially claimed ignorance regarding the specific nature of the attack. The group struggled to define the exact scope of the damage.
4Escalation of Criminal Intent
The plot evolved from simple theft to arson over several months. Initially, the suspects considered stealing bridal gowns or vandalizing the shop with paint and broken tiles. By autumn, the plan shifted toward fire-based destruction, leading the group to purchase jerrycans and conduct research on flammable substances using the AI tool ChatGPT.
5Preparation and Illegal Tools
The suspects prepared for the attack by acquiring black clothing and illegal heavy fireworks known as Cobra's. Ilias B. was responsible for purchasing the pyrotechnics. They debated the exact volume of gasoline required to ensure the shop was destroyed, eventually settling on a massive quantity of 175 liters for the final arson attempt.
6Police Encounter Before Attack
On November 30, police discovered Mourad B. and Ilias B. in a Ford Transit van near an Oosterhout shopping center. The men were wearing black clothing and possessed 170 liters of gasoline. Despite police suspicions of a planned attack, the individuals were released the following day, allowing the plot to proceed unchecked.
7The Fatal Morning Attack
One week after their release, Mourad B. and Ilias B. returned to the Tarwekamp location with new supplies. They successfully triggered the massive explosion in the early morning hours of December 7. The resulting blast caused the deaths of six people, marking a catastrophic conclusion to the months of calculated criminal preparation.
8Mastermind Claims Lack Knowledge
Moshtag B. claimed he was in London during the explosion, having followed his ex-girlfriend. He asserted that he was unaware the accomplices would utilize such a large quantity of gasoline. He stated that he only realized the location of the attack after seeing aerial footage of the destroyed apartment building and her car.
