Cloudflare introduces Billable Usage API for automated cost tracking
Monitor your cloud spending product-by-product with daily updates and FinOps integration.
1Core API functionality
Cloudflare's new Billable Usage API enables users to programmatically retrieve account-level usage and cost data broken down by product and service period. With a single API call, you can access data for all usage-based products including Workers, R2, D1, and Workers AI. Data updates daily and includes column names compatible with FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) standards.
2Granular cost analysis
API responses return one row per product per billing period. ServiceName and ServiceFamilyName fields identify specific products, while ChargePeriodStart/End shows the date range. PricingQuantity and ConsumedUnit display usage amounts, with ContractedCost showing period costs. ZoneId and ZoneName fields allow tracking usage by specific zones. Cumulated fields provide running totals for the billing period.
3FinOps compatibility
The API adopts the FOCUS format used by major cloud providers like AWS and Azure, enabling direct integration with existing FinOps tools. While not yet fully compliant with all specification requirements, full conformance is on the roadmap. Finance teams can use this data for internal project costing and customer billing purposes, eliminating manual export processes.
4Vantage integration
Cloudflare announced native integration with Vantage, an infrastructure cost management platform. This allows Cloudflare spending to appear alongside costs from 30+ other cloud providers in a unified interface. Vantage pulls data daily, analyzing spend by product, zone, and account to show which teams are driving costs, enabling better cost attribution and accountability.
5Cross-provider analysis
The integration enables viewing Cloudflare costs in the same reports as AWS and Azure expenditures. Virtual Tags feature allows allocation by team or product line across all providers. Anomaly detection monitors unexpected spending spikes in Workers or R2 just like other providers, triggering alerts via Slack or Email when spend deviates from established baselines.
6FinOps assistant support
Users can query Vantage's console-based FinOps assistant with questions like 'Which provider drove most costs last week?' The same data can be accessed through AI models like Claude or ChatGPT via Vantage's hosted MCP server. Cloudflare costs automatically appear alongside other connected providers without manual exports or separate dashboards.
7Developer conveniences
Beyond finance teams, the API simplifies workflows for developers. Previously manual processes requiring screenshots or exports now resolve with a single HTTP call. Developers can integrate cost data into scripts using simple curl commands. Self-serve accounts can start immediately using API tokens with Billing Read permissions.
8Future roadmap
Cloudflare is working towards more real-time data refreshes beyond the current daily updates, with product-specific improvements planned. While CumulatedContractedCost shows current billing cycle spend, future forecasting capabilities will predict end-of-period costs at both account and product levels. An equivalent API experience for Enterprise contracts is currently in development.
