How Capcom Integrated Path Tracing into RE ENGINE

Real-time lighting revolution in Resident Evil and PRAGMATA.

1Introduction of Path Tracing

Capcom's RE ENGINE team revolutionized real-time rendering quality by implementing path tracing technology in Resident Evil Requiem and PRAGMATA. This technology replaced shadow maps with direct lighting, achieving visual consistency. Optimized with NVIDIA's RTX Kit and DLSS, the system significantly reduced the gap between cinematic and in-game visuals.

2Technological Infrastructure

After two years of development, the RE ENGINE team first created a reference path tracer, then validated it against DCC software. The game version was optimized with DLSS Ray Reconstruction for denoising. Technical artists worked closely with rendering engineers to integrate the technology into both titles simultaneously.

3Lighting Revolution

Path tracing brought major improvements to character lighting. By overcoming resolution limitations of traditional shadow maps, it achieved more dimensional shadows and indirect illumination. This minimized visual discrepancies between gameplay and cinematic scenes.

4Cross-Platform Compatibility

RE ENGINE's RayQuery-based ray tracing enabled the technology to work across a wide range of devices. NVIDIA DLSS Ray Reconstruction accelerated denoising processes. Special optimizations were developed for reflections and shadows in areas with missing geometry.

5Production Pipeline Transformation

Path tracing not only enhanced render quality but also transformed production processes. Collaboration between artists and technical teams deepened. Indirect lighting and reflections could now be integrated naturally rather than through manual adjustments.

6Performance Optimizations

Performance issues caused by traditional methods like AlphaTest in path tracing were overcome with a new ScreenSpaceAlphaTest method. This approach optimized resource usage by performing screen-space depth comparisons during ray hits instead of expensive texture lookups.

7Scene Complexity Management

A dedicated sampling structure (NEE) was used to reduce noise in complex scenes. For indoor areas dominated by IBL, ReSTIR GI sampled contributing paths. These techniques maintained visual quality while improving performance.

8Industry Milestone

Capcom's move marked the beginning of a new era in real-time rendering. Path tracing represents not just a visual enhancement but a strategic shift redefining game development processes and hardware expectations. This advancement set new standards for high-performance PCs.
