1Indicators Point to Crypto Spring

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan stated that third-quarter performance metrics suggest the beginning of a crypto spring. According to the firm's quarterly market review, nearly every fundamental indicator tracked showed a sharp upward reversal, driven by strong token price recoveries and rapidly expanding onchain market activity across ecosystems.

2Large-Cap Index and Inflow Rebound

The Bitwise Large Cap Crypto Index gained 46.4% during the third quarter. United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $6 billion in net inflows, pushing year-to-date flows back into positive territory. Hougan noted that three months prior, market prices, institutional ETF flows, and decentralized activity were severely depressed.

3Top Token Performers in Q3

All ten assets in the large-cap index posted double-digit quarterly gains. Bitcoin rose 42.3%, Ether climbed 69.1%, and Solana increased 59.2%. Chainlink led all index components with a 97.6% surge. Despite these robust quarterly gains, Bitwise noted the large-cap index remained down 6.2% year-to-date through September.

4Expansion of Tokenized Equity Markets

Onchain market growth extended beyond basic spot asset price appreciation. The value of tokenized equities climbed 65.5% to reach nearly $3.2 billion. Simultaneously, open interest across decentralized perpetual futures hit a record near $26 billion, increasingly backed by traditional stocks, commodities, foreign exchange, and pre-IPO private company shares.

5Equities and Treasury Holdings Diverge

The broader market recovery bypassed several crypto-linked public equities. Shares of Bitcoin miners Riot Platforms and Hut 8 dropped 26.4% and 25.4%, respectively, while Galaxy Digital fell 16.8%. The count of public companies holding Bitcoin slipped to 173, though aggregate corporate Bitcoin reserves grew 0.5%.

6Public Corporate Ether Treasury Trends

Corporate treasury behavior mirrored similar consolidation across Ether holdings during the quarter. The number of publicly traded companies holding Ether declined from 40 down to 35. However, the total volume of Ether held across these corporate balances increased over the period despite the smaller roster of corporate holders.

7Regulatory Catalysts for Tokenization

Bitwise projected that fourth-quarter developments will shift asset tokenization from experimental pilots into active production. The firm expects the Securities and Exchange Commission's innovation exemption to pull billions in tokenized assets onto networks such as Ethereum, Solana, and NEAR as regulatory pathways provide clearer operating rules for issuers.

8Decentralized Perpetual Futures Growth

Trading volume on decentralized perpetual venues like Hyperliquid and Lighter exceeded $6 trillion year-to-date, marking a 42% increase year-over-year. Bitwise projects this growth will accelerate further during the fourth quarter as clear regulatory frameworks develop and allow United States institutional capital to actively participate in onchain derivatives.
