How to Use Google's SynthID AI Detection Website

Google releases a public tool to verify AI-generated content via embedded watermarks.

1Public Access to Detection

Google has officially opened its SynthID Detector tool to the general public, allowing users to verify if images, videos, or audio files were created using generative AI. Previously restricted to select journalists and researchers in 2025, this web-based utility now provides a direct interface for anyone to check content authenticity.

2Mechanism of Watermark Scanning

The tool functions by scanning files for specific, imperceptible watermarks embedded during the generation process. Users simply upload their media to the SynthID website and receive a binary yes or no result. This process replaces the previous method of relying on Gemini to self-identify its own generated content outputs.

3Broadening Partner Ecosystem Support

Beyond Google’s own Gemini model, the detector identifies watermarks from various industry partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao. While Apple is a participant in the SynthID framework, the current detector tool does not yet support the identification of Apple-generated media, though development for that integration is reportedly still in progress.

4Technical Limitations and Scope

The detector is strictly limited to identifying SynthID-specific watermarks rather than analyzing general patterns of AI generation. Consequently, it cannot detect content produced by models that do not utilize the SynthID standard, such as those developed by Meta. It also fails to specify which portions of a file are AI-generated.

5Preventing System Abuse Measures

To mitigate risks of users attempting to reverse-engineer or bypass the watermark, Google has implemented strict usage constraints. Individuals are limited to approximately ten checks per day and must be logged into a Google, OpenAI, or Apple account to access the service, preventing automated or mass-scale probing of the detection mechanism.

6Persistence Against Media Editing

Google asserts that SynthID signatures are designed to remain intact even if the AI-generated media undergoes subsequent editing. This persistence is a critical feature for maintaining verification integrity. However, the company acknowledges that no system is entirely immune to sophisticated manipulation attempts by determined actors seeking to circumvent these digital labels.

7Landscape of Detection Tools

The market for AI detection remains fragmented, with various companies deploying proprietary watermarking standards. OpenAI maintains its own detection utility, while Meta utilizes a Content Seal system. Despite these efforts, no universal tool exists that can reliably identify AI-generated content across all platforms, leaving a significant gap in cross-model verification capabilities.

8Reliability of Current Solutions

General-purpose AI detectors currently available to the public often suffer from high rates of false positives, frequently mislabeling human-created work as AI-generated. While SynthID is considered one of the more reliable options due to its watermark-based approach, it remains a specialized tool rather than a comprehensive solution for all digital media.
