Figma Introduces Markdown-Based Specs to Govern AI Agent Design Workflows
New features enable teams to define design systems for predictable AI-driven output.
1New Markdown-Based Design Governance
Figma launched a Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs to help companies define their design language. This tool allows teams to create reference documents that both human designers and AI agents can follow. Specs can exist as standalone files or directly on the canvas, embedding FigJam diagrams, code layers, and various design elements.
2Steering AI Toward Predictable Outcomes
The company is expanding access to its on-canvas AI agent while providing new tools to manage non-deterministic behavior. By using centralized design and code libraries, teams can now provide specific context to these agents. This ensures that AI-generated outputs adhere strictly to established brand rules and internal design system guidelines during creation.
3Public Beta for Code Layers
Figma is moving its code layers feature into public beta following a private testing phase that began in June. This functionality allows users to integrate actual code into canvas designs for interactive prototyping. Users can prompt the AI agent to transform designs into code or modify existing code segments to iterate on prototypes.
4Strategic Integration with Payload CMS
Following the acquisition of the open-source headless CMS Payload last year, Figma is now integrating it with its Figma Make product. This move enables users to generate dynamic websites and manage content directly within the platform. Payload has seen a sixfold increase in downloads over the past twelve months, signaling strong user adoption.
5Bridging Design and Software Shipping
Chief Design Officer Loredana Crisan noted that while code production has increased seventeen-fold, software releases have only grown by 1.3 times. Much of this code is currently used for product discovery and design rather than production. Figma aims to position itself as the primary environment where software teams decide what to build.
6Expanding the AI Ecosystem
Figma is supporting over twenty new tools through its Model Context Protocol, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam. These integrations aim to broaden the utility of the platform by connecting various third-party agents and services, allowing them to interact more effectively with a company's specific design context.
7Growth in the Indian Market
Figma established its first office in India late last year to support sales, partnerships, and product development. India currently represents the company's largest user base outside of the United States. The platform is already utilized by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, highlighting significant regional enterprise penetration.
8Future of Design Systems
These updates represent a shift toward making design systems machine-readable, ensuring that AI agents act as extensions of a brand's identity. By providing structured context through Specs and code layers, Figma is attempting to solve the reliability issues inherent in generative AI, ultimately aiming to accelerate the transition from design to production.
