Google AI Overviews Now Trigger for 83% of US Branded Searches
Ahrefs study reveals aggressive expansion into brand queries, threatening organic brand narrative control.
1Branded Query Penetration Soars
Ahrefs analyzed 232.8 million US desktop Google search crawls between July and September. Researchers found that AI Overviews appeared in 82.91% of branded search results by late September. This marks a sharp climb from monthly averages of 61.3% in July and 65.1% in August across enterprise searches.
2Gap With Non-Branded Shrinks
Historically, Google triggered AI Overviews primarily on informational and non-branded queries. Between July and September, branded query trigger rates grew by 12 percentage points, roughly a 20% relative increase. Meanwhile, non-branded queries grew by only 4.8 percentage points, narrowing the historical disparity between both query classes.
3Top Spot Displacement Risk
In a targeted tracking panel of 100 enterprise brand queries, AI Overview presence rose from five instances in July to 63 by late September. Crucially, 76.2% of these triggered overviews occupied position one, achieving an average position of 1.49 directly above the company’s official homepage.
4External Citation Breakdown
When generating branded summaries, AI Overviews frequently pull from third-party ecosystems rather than primary enterprise domains. Wikipedia represented nearly 72% of all external citations in the 100-brand panel. YouTube and LinkedIn followed as the most common external sources used to construct search narratives for tracked companies.
5Third-Party Narrative Control
The primary strategic risk of branded AI Overviews is narrative dilution rather than pure traffic loss. While previous studies documented a 58% organic click drop, third-party video citations often surface outdated product specifications. External publishers and third-party creators now effectively mediate brand messaging on prime search real estate.
6Limited Competitor Infiltration
Despite narrative risks, Google’s models rarely cite direct business rivals in branded summaries. Out of 58 analyzed full text responses, only two explicitly mentioned competitors, such as Pepsi referencing Coca-Cola. Across 57 source lists, only one verified competitor-owned domain appeared as an external citation.
7Tracking Workflow Implementation
Marketing teams must monitor their specific exposure using dedicated keyword filters within Site Explorer. SEO practitioners should isolate branded keyword segments and filter for AI Overview SERP features. Specialized brand radar tooling helps teams track external domains, competitive mentions, and citation links across generated summaries.
8Strategic SEO Implications
Google continues integrating generative summaries across search results despite industry pushback regarding traffic cannibalization. Brand teams can no longer assume their primary domain will monopolize exact-match name queries. Protecting organic search presence now requires managing citations on Wikipedia, YouTube, and key professional networks aggressively.
