South Korea's $540 Billion Chip Hub Plan
Facing challenges with electricity and water resources.
1South Korea's Ambitious Goal
South Korea plans to build a $540 billion chip hub in the Honam region. This project aims to solidify the country's leadership in technology. However, the region's insufficient electricity and water resources pose a significant challenge.
2Infrastructure Challenges
The planned chip hub in Honam would need to meet 70-80% of the region's annual electricity consumption. This presents a major challenge for the existing power grid. Water resources are similarly insufficient.
3The Yongin Example
The Yongin megacluster south of Seoul serves as a comparison point for Honam. At full capacity, Yongin would meet a quarter of the capital region's electricity demand. Honam requires a similar infrastructure.
4Water Resource Issues
Advanced chip fabs consume 650,000 tons of ultrapure water daily. To meet this demand, Honam plans to raise the Dongbok Dam. However, this project could affect thousands of households.
5Nuclear Energy Debates
To bridge the electricity gap, the government is considering increasing nuclear capacity and extending the lifespan of old reactors. These plans have sparked protests from locals near Yeonggwang.
6Renewable Energy Hopes
The Honam region aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 37.7 GW by 2035. This plan includes 11 GW of offshore wind farms off Sinan County. However, timing remains a critical factor.
