1Extended Aerial Surveillance Mission

France has extended the deployment of its Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft at Romania’s Mihail Kogalniceanu air base. Originally scheduled to depart on November 6, the plane will remain for several additional weeks. This decision follows a series of deadly strikes on merchant vessels operating near the Black Sea’s eastern flank.

2Deadly Risks to Shipping

The Black Sea has become a volatile corridor for grain and oil shipments. Recent attacks in October alone resulted in at least nine cargo ships being struck near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. Reports indicate that these incidents have left approximately 34 sailors dead or missing, highlighting the extreme danger.

3Detection Versus Neutralization Limits

The French Atlantique 2 is specialized in detecting submarines, warships, and sea drones. While the crew successfully identified three drones targeting the Greek-owned Contship Jet on October 28, the commander emphasized that the aircraft is strictly for surveillance. It lacks the technical capability to neutralize or intercept these incoming maritime threats.

4Diplomatic Response and Visits

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to visit Romania and Bulgaria next week to address security tensions. She will meet with Romanian President Nicușor Dan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. These high-level meetings aim to assess the regional impact of the ongoing maritime war on commercial navigation.

5Conflicting Regional Perspectives

Romania has formally blamed Russia for the escalating aggression and the strikes on commercial vessels. Conversely, Bulgaria has avoided direct attribution, describing the drones as originating from an eastern direction. This diplomatic divergence complicates the collective security response required to protect the vital maritime trade routes shared by regional NATO members.

6Physical Evidence of Threats

Security concerns intensified in Bulgaria after a local resident discovered a drone washed up near the coastal town of Shabla. Mayor Mariyan Zhechev confirmed the recovery of the aerial vehicle. Authorities have not yet established the drone's origin or confirmed if it is linked to the recent attacks on merchant shipping.

7International Reconnaissance Efforts

Beyond the French deployment, NATO allies are increasing their presence in the region. Observers recently spotted Italian, British, and American reconnaissance aircraft conducting simultaneous missions over the Black Sea. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that India and Turkey have proposed new initiatives to help secure grain-carrying vessels.

8Future Defense Commitments

NATO has reaffirmed its commitment to defending all member states, describing its stance as ironclad. The alliance recently announced plans to invest over $40 billion in counter-drone capabilities over the next five years. These measures are intended to mitigate the growing threat posed by autonomous systems in the Black Sea theater.
