A Shell-Shaped Villa in Sardinia Blending Architecture with Mediterranean Nature
Designer Federica Gosio creates an organic, wind-swept retreat honoring the coastal landscape of Porto Rafael.
1Architectural Shell Concept
Designer Federica Gosio describes this Sardinian villa as an arch over the sea, resembling a white seashell emerging from the landscape. Located in Porto Rafael, the structure avoids rigid guiding principles, instead focusing on adapting to the rugged coastal environment. The design aims to integrate grace and strength into the natural context.
2Honoring Design Legacy
Homeowner Alessandra Radaelli collaborated with Gosio to create an organic, sculptural retreat that respects the legacy of Rafael Neville, the founder of Porto Rafael. Their shared vision prioritized a harmonious approach where the architecture seamlessly blends into the surrounding Mediterranean landscape, ensuring the villa feels like a natural extension of the island.
3Textured and Curved Aesthetics
The villa is defined by pure white surfaces, curved lines, and textured finishes that evoke the feeling of being shaped by the powerful Mistral winds. By eliminating straight lines, Gosio achieved a softer silhouette. Rattan and straw accents are strategically used throughout the interior to add warmth to the minimalist, sun-drenched spaces.
4Local Material Integration
The project heavily utilizes Orosei marble, a stone native to the Sardinian coast, for floors and custom sinks. This choice reinforces the connection between the home and its geography. Every element, from the hand-brushed iron arched door by Daniele Mingardo to the sculptural creations by Pretziada, contributes to a cohesive, measured design.
5Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow
Outdoor spaces function as direct extensions of the interior, featuring panoramic views of the sea and lush Mediterranean vegetation. The property includes green terraces, an outdoor kitchen, and an infinity-edge pool. Nautical-themed wooden furnishings and rattan lounge sets create a consistent aesthetic that bridges the gap between the villa and the garden.
6Refined Interior Details
The living area features an Asawa sofa by Secolo and a vintage rattan pendant lamp, while the dining space centers around a Luna Elíptica table by La Nena. Each room, including the primary bedroom and guest suites, incorporates neutral tones and custom headboards to maintain the home's calm, organic, and contemporary Mediterranean atmosphere.
7Functional Artistic Elements
Bathrooms utilize high-end fixtures like Rubinetterie Stella faucets and Catalano sinks, paired with textured Totem tiles from 41zero42. The kitchen showcases custom oak cabinets and WA ceramic tiles by Decoratori Bassanesi. These functional choices maintain the villa's refined balance of memory, nature, and design, ensuring utility does not compromise the overall artistic vision.
8Design as Environmental Dialogue
Ultimately, the villa serves as a testament to site-specific architecture that interprets the Mediterranean lifestyle through a contemporary lens. By carefully balancing memory, nature, and design, Gosio has created an earthly Eden. The project demonstrates how intentional, organic geometry can successfully harmonize a modern residence with the slow, rhythmic pace of island life.
