1Broad Corporate Resistance Emerges

A total of 56 companies have now formally objected to the OKXICE platform, which aims to facilitate around-the-clock trading of tokenized U.S. stocks. This group includes 49 firms from the original list of 62, representing approximately 79% of the targeted entities. Seven additional companies outside the initial lineup have also registered their opposition.

2High-Profile Tech Firms Join

Amazon, Tesla, and SpaceX are the latest prominent additions to the growing list of objectors. Other notable companies opposing the initiative include Netflix, SoFi Technologies, and semiconductor manufacturer Lam Research. These firms join a diverse group of previous objectors, such as Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, and Nvidia, signaling widespread corporate concern regarding the plan.

3Platform Mechanics and Goals

OKXICE is a joint venture between the cryptocurrency exchange OKX and the Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange. The platform intends to allow investors to trade blockchain-based representations of U.S. stocks outside traditional exchange hours. This project operates under temporary regulatory relief introduced by the SEC in September.

4Expanding Scope of Objections

The resistance has expanded beyond the 62 companies initially selected for the platform. Seven firms not included in the original proposal, such as Wells Fargo, Arm Holdings, and Cerebras Systems, have also filed objections. This suggests that corporate concerns regarding the tokenization of shares are not limited to the specific businesses identified by OKXICE.

5Regulatory Framework and Timeline

The SEC framework established in September allows companies to formally object to tokenized securities offerings within a 30-day window following the initial public notice. With the notice issued on October 4, the deadline for companies to register their resistance is nearing. Only 13 of the original 62 targeted companies have yet to file objections.

6Leadership Perspective on Adoption

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, an OKX board member and OKXICE co-chair, has addressed the resistance. He views tokenized equity trading as an emerging market development and expects companies to adopt the technology at different speeds. Cuomo has also questioned the necessity of maintaining conventional trading hours in a global, around-the-clock financial environment.

7Ambiguity in Corporate Motives

The public notices filed by the objecting companies do not detail the specific reasons behind their resistance. Furthermore, opposing the OKXICE proposal does not necessarily indicate a broader rejection of blockchain-based securities. The lack of explicit rationale leaves the underlying technical or strategic concerns of these major corporations largely undefined at this current stage.

8Future of Tokenized Trading

The broadening opposition raises significant questions about the viability and scale of the proposed OKXICE platform. As the majority of targeted firms reject the initiative, the venture may need to adjust its strategy to accommodate corporate resistance. The project's future now depends on navigating these formal objections while maintaining its core ambition for continuous trading.
