Time to Plan for the Next Two Solar Eclipses
The solar eclipses of 2027 and 2028 promise unforgettable moments for viewers.
1The Golden Age of Solar Eclipses
The total solar eclipse on August 12th offered some of the most impressive images in recent years. However, the mini golden age of solar eclipses in Europe is just beginning. The 'Iberian eclipse trio' has two more events, both promising to be more spectacular than the recent one.
22027: The Eclipse of the Century
On August 2, 2027, one of the longest total solar eclipses of this century will occur. At its peak, the moon will completely cover the sun for 6 minutes and 23 seconds. This duration is nearly three times longer than the totality phase of the August 12th eclipse, making it the longest eclipse in 100 years.
3Where to Watch the Eclipse
The total eclipse will be visible along a narrow band. This path will start in southern Spain and northern Africa, crossing Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt, then continuing through Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Spain will be the only European country where the total phase can be observed.
4A Historic Moment in Egypt
Egypt will witness both the peak and the longest duration of the eclipse. The moon's shadow will fall over ancient Thebes, covering the temples of Karnak and Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings on the other side of the Nile. The Giza pyramids, further north, will lie just outside the path of totality and experience a partial eclipse.
52028: The Ring of Fire
The third eclipse in the series will occur on January 26, 2028. This time, the moon will not completely cover the sun, leaving a bright ring of fire visible around it. The path of annularity will cross South America, starting from Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil, before crossing the Atlantic and ending in Portugal and Spain.
6A Long-lasting Spectacle in Brazil
Brazil will host the longest-lasting spectacle. Here, the ring of fire will remain visible for 10 minutes and 27 seconds, making this event one of the longest annular eclipses of the century. Spain will experience a shorter but potentially very photogenic version.
7Photogenic Moments in Spain
In Spain, cities like Seville, Córdoba, Albacete, and Valencia will witness the ring of fire for about seven minutes, appearing very close to the horizon just before sunset. This will make the eclipse a unique opportunity for photographers.
8Planning Should Start Now
Planning early is crucial to not miss these rare astronomical events. Whether you're in Spain or elsewhere along the eclipse path, preparing your viewing plan now will ensure an unforgettable experience.
