Courtyard-Centric Modern Home Design in Phan Rang
Plus Idea Studio's minimalist concept integrating natural light and greenery
1Project Philosophy
Designed by Plus Idea Studio, The Inner Court House breaks from traditional street-facing home concepts by organizing around a central courtyard. The 250-square-meter project was created to adapt to the hot climate of Phan Rang, Vietnam. Led by architect Ha Nam Nguyen, the team aimed to maximize natural ventilation and daylight in this residential space. The inward-looking design prioritizes privacy while maintaining strong connections to nature.
2Architectural Approach
The structure maintains privacy with its enclosed facade while the central courtyard provides abundant greenery and natural light. Concrete dominates the material palette, with clean minimalist lines defining the architecture. The project team included Hoang Phuc Nguyen and Bich Thuy Pham Vu. Completed in 2025, the house was documented through striking photographs by Paul Phan that capture its architectural essence.
3Climate-Responsive Design
Phan Rang's tropical climate conditions fundamentally shaped the design. The courtyard system enables natural airflow throughout the home's interior spaces. This passive cooling method reduces energy consumption while enhancing comfort levels. Material selections specifically address the region's high temperatures and humidity. The design demonstrates thoughtful adaptation to local environmental factors.
4Spatial Organization
Developed on a 250-square-meter plot, the project centers around the courtyard with living spaces radiating outward. This layout creates visual and physical continuity between interior and exterior. The design blends modern architectural language with Vietnam's traditional courtyard house typology. Natural materials and a light color palette facilitate smooth transitions between spaces.
5Photographic Documentation
Project photographs by Paul Phan effectively capture the building's architectural character. Images taken at different times of day reveal the dynamic relationship between light and space. The photos also document the textural richness of concrete surfaces and precision of minimalist details. These visual representations gained significant exposure on ArchDaily's international platform.
6Studio Design Ethos
Plus Idea Studio continues its characteristic minimalist language in this project. The firm grounds its architectural solutions in local context and climatic conditions. The extensive use of concrete aligns with the studio's material preferences. The team is recognized for developing strong concepts even in small-scale residential projects.
7Contribution to Regional Architecture
The Inner Court House represents an important example of contemporary residential architecture in Vietnam. By reinterpreting traditional courtyard typology through a modern lens, the project contributes to the region's architectural identity. Local materials processed with contemporary techniques meet sustainable design principles. The work has attracted attention on international architecture platforms.
8Position in Architectural Trends
This project successfully represents the growing global trend of inward-looking residential design. Balancing privacy needs with desires for nature connection, the design responds to evolving urban living patterns. The courtyard concept provides flexible spaces suitable for post-pandemic work-from-home needs. Critics view the project as an architectural manifestation of minimalist living culture with regional specificity.
