1Commitment to UEFA Fixtures

FAI President Paul Cooke confirmed the association’s intention to fulfill Republic of Ireland matches against Israel. Speaking at the annual general meeting in Cork, he emphasized that the decision aimed to serve the best interests of Irish football while acknowledging the complex humanitarian situation currently unfolding in the Gaza region.

2Oireachtas Committee Scheduling Conflict

The FAI declined an invitation to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Sport next week regarding safeguarding issues. Cooke stated the association cannot attend on the proposed date but has offered several alternative times for the meeting. Committee chairman Alan Kelly has previously suggested ministerial intervention if engagement does not occur.

3Board Stance on Israel Matches

Independent director candidate Packie Bonner reaffirmed his support for playing the contested Nations League games. Bonner, who previously advocated for the fixtures to proceed in July, stated he remains satisfied that the board acted in accordance with the members' wishes. Security was present at the venue, though protests remained minimal.

4Financial Recovery and Debt

The FAI reported an improved financial position, with total debt decreasing to 38 million euros from 42 million euros earlier in 2024. Projections indicate this figure will drop further to 35.3 million euros by the end of 2026. Auditors described this period as one of consolidation, transformation, and continued financial recovery.

5Turnover and Operational Context

Annual turnover reached 59.255 million euros, representing a slight decrease compared to the previous year. This decline is attributed to the absence of hosting the Europa League final in Dublin, which had previously boosted revenue figures. The association continues to focus on stabilizing its fiscal health through these strategic financial measures.

6Leadership and Board Elections

During the assembly, members ratified the election of four new Football Directors. Packie Bonner, Laura Finnegan O'Halloran, Caroline Rhatigan, and Ursula Scully were officially confirmed in their roles. Additionally, former Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern was granted honorary life membership in recognition of his service to the National League Committee.

7Public and Political Scrutiny

The Stop the Game campaign had raised questions regarding humanitarian support for Gaza and the FAI's obligations under the Genocide Convention. Despite these concerns, the AGM proceeded with a heavy security presence at the Silver Springs Conference Centre. The association continues to navigate the intersection of international sports and political pressure.

8Looking Toward Future Matches

As governance discussions continue, the FAI shifts focus to domestic competitions. The Club Orange FAI Cup final between Derry City and Waterford FC is scheduled for Sunday. This event serves as a reminder of the association's core operational focus on managing Irish football leagues and tournaments despite ongoing administrative and political challenges.
