Chunghwa Telecom Invests in 10 Taiwanese Content Projects
Taiwan's largest telecom operator expands into original IP production and creative partnerships.
1Strategic Content Expansion
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecommunications operator, announced 10 new investments in film, television, and music projects. The announcement occurred during the Chunghwa Telecom Content Slate and Partnership Showcase at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest. This initiative aims to support local original intellectual property while connecting Taiwanese creators with international partners.
2Diverse Scripted Slate
The investment portfolio features four scripted series, including the police crime drama Gunshot and the urban drama C'est la Vie. Additionally, the company is backing Yesterday’s Daughter, Tomorrow’s Mother and the fantasy adventure Guides to the World Below. These projects involve collaborations with public broadcaster PTS Taigi TV and various independent producers.
3Film and Culinary Projects
Film investments include the horror project Demon of the East: Black Condo, which is part of a multi-country Asian cinematic universe. The company also backed Call of Lobster, a project that previously won the Chunghwa Telecom Award. Furthermore, they are funding Next Z Chef, Taiwan's first cooking competition show for young people.
4Music and Global Reach
Beyond screen content, the investment extends to the music industry through the support of the Asian tour Speak in Silence. The indie band Shallow Levée will perform approximately 50 shows across Taiwan and eight other Asian countries. This move highlights the company's intent to diversify its cultural portfolio beyond traditional digital media.
5Equity in Production Houses
Chunghwa Telecom and its subsidiary, Chunghwa Digital Cultural and Creative, have acquired equity stakes in DaMou Entertainment and Horiza Creations. DaMou is known for producing acclaimed series such as The World Between Us II and Wave Makers. Horiza utilizes community engagement and crowdfunding strategies to better understand and predict audience preferences.
6Government and Industry Support
Taiwan’s Minister of Culture, Li Yuan, attended the showcase to praise the company's role in the creative ecosystem. He described Chunghwa Telecom as a pyramid, noting that their core business provides the foundation for supporting high-level creative professionals. This public-private alignment underscores the government's commitment to fostering a robust local creative industry.
7Proven Track Record
The company’s previous investments have already yielded significant critical recognition. Chunghwa-backed films, specifically Arrested Memory and The Photo From 1977, received a combined 12 nominations at the 63rd Golden Horse Awards. These accolades demonstrate the company's ability to identify and support high-quality projects that resonate with both critics and local audiences.
8Platform and Future Outlook
Chunghwa Telecom operates mobile and broadband networks, alongside the MOD IPTV service and Hami Video streaming platform. With over 3 million subscribers, the company leverages its infrastructure to distribute content. Executives stated they will continue connecting funding and talent to help Taiwanese content reach broader international markets in the future.
