Primary School Wiesental: An Educational Campus Integrated with Nature
A modern school design opening to the river valley in Baar, Switzerland.
1Project Overview
Located on a 14,868 m² site overlooking the Lorze River valley in Baar, Switzerland, the Wiesental Primary School is designed by PENZISBETTINI Architekten for completion in 2025. Its orthogonal layout respects the natural landscape while separating educational functions and maintaining a sense of community.
2Architectural Approach
Led by Daniel Penzis and Giulio Bettini, the team positioned the school orthogonally to open towards the valley views. Timbatec Holzbauingenieure AG's timber engineering solutions stand out, with landscape design by Schläpfer Carstensen. Specialist consultants handled acoustics (Bakus Bauphysik) and lighting (Reflexion AG).
3Functional Organization
The campus design clearly zones educational spaces while connecting them through shared areas. Managed by Jäger Coneco, this approach supports both individual and social development. The spatial distribution allows flexible use according to educational programs, creating adaptable learning environments.
4Sustainable Solutions
RMB Engineering AG's mechanical systems and Hefti. Hess. Martignoni's electrical infrastructure prioritize energy efficiency. Bakus Bauphysik's acoustic treatments optimize learning environments, while Reflexion AG's lighting maximizes natural light. The project uses eco-friendly construction materials throughout.
5Community Impact
Funded by the Municipality of Baar, the project strengthens regional education infrastructure. Its nature-integrated design offers students a learning experience immersed in greenery. The architecture also addresses the community's need for public spaces, enhancing social interaction through thoughtful design.
6Innovation in Educational Architecture
Wiesental Primary School pioneers a model that combines modern pedagogy with physical environment. Its balance of functional separation and integration sets a benchmark for future school designs. The project demonstrates how sustainability and educational efficiency can be simultaneously optimized.
