10 Power Conference Football Stars to Watch in 2026
Heisman contenders and players who will dominate the championship race
1The Rising Stars of the Season
Ten standout players in the 2026 college football season are leading the Heisman Trophy race. Among them are four quarterbacks, two receivers, and a running back. On defense, an edge rusher and a cornerback will make headlines all season. Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith finished sixth in Heisman voting last year and set a record with 11 100-yard games.
2The Leader of Ole Miss
Senior quarterback Jaxson Chambliss, granted an extra season, keeps the Rebels in the championship race. Last season, he threw for 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions. Despite starting as a backup, the DII transfer led the team to the CFP. With new receivers and changes on the line, he forms a strong QB/RB duo with Kewan Lacy.
3Miami's Young Talent
Sophomore receiver/all-purpose player Jaden Toney introduced himself last season by scoring in the opener against Notre Dame. At just 17, he amassed 1,622 all-purpose yards and threw two touchdown passes. Now 18, Toney is part of an elite roster featuring Duke transfer Darian Mensah. A versatile weapon for coordinator Shannon Dawson.
4The Wall of Defense
Notre Dame cornerback Jordan Moore, with five interceptions and seven pass breakups, was named a first-team All-American last season. His 6-2, 197-pound frame and speed make him part of a deep defensive unit. Offensive coordinators avoid throwing his way, making him one of the most feared defenders.
5Oregon's Quarterback
Senior quarterback Dante Moore impressed in 2025 with 30 touchdown passes, a 71.8% completion rate, and a top-eight rating. Despite receiver injuries, including Evan Stewart's summer knee injury, he excelled. Now with Stewart and Dakorien Moore healthy, plus tight end Jamari Johnson, he leads a deep receiving corps.
6Texas' Defensive Star
Junior edge rusher Ethan Simmons led the SEC last season with 12 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. After his first career start, he became a standout. In Will Muschamp's defense, games against Missouri, LSU, and Texas A&M could boost his Heisman candidacy and the Longhorns' playoff hopes.
7Indiana's Veteran Player
Redshirt senior left tackle Carter Smith is one of the few Hoosiers remaining from the 2023 dark days, when a trick play was needed to beat Akron in quadruple overtime. Now, his experience and leadership anchor a team contending for championships.
8Expectations for the 2026 Season
These 10 players will shine in the 2026 college football season, both individually and in their teams' championship pursuits. The Heisman race and playoff battle will hinge on their performances, making them the season's most exciting stories.
