Amazon expands drone deliveries to 500 new cities

After 13 years, Bezos' drone dream takes flight with 30-minute Prime deliveries

1A 13-year drone dream

In 2013, Jeff Bezos unveiled Amazon's first delivery drone on CBS, promising 30-minute deliveries within 4-5 years. Technical challenges, regulatory hurdles and costs delayed the project. Today, with expansion plans to 500 U.S. cities, Amazon takes a significant step toward realizing this vision. The expansion represents a sixfold increase in their drone network coverage.

2New delivery zones

Amazon is expanding drone deliveries to metro areas including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland and Atlanta. The company hasn't disclosed drone fleet sizes or daily delivery targets per location. Current operations continue in Texas, Louisiana and Kansas. Drones can deliver within 30 minutes from fulfillment centers but are limited to a 7-mile radius.

3Delivery terms and fees

Items under 5 pounds (2.3kg) that fit in a large shoebox qualify for drone delivery. Prime members get free delivery on orders over $50, otherwise $2.99 per delivery. Non-Prime members pay $4.99 per drop. The drone option appears in the Amazon app during checkout for eligible items.

4Technical limitations

Drones currently operate only in suburbs as they require 10-foot clearance for safe landing. Urban obstacles like tall buildings complicate operations. Amazon aims to extend the 7-mile range to 15 miles through battery and sound technology improvements, which would enable rural deliveries.

5Drone delivery by numbers

Amazon has delivered hundreds of thousands of packages by drone this year, but this represents a fraction of their daily 20 million U.S. deliveries. Competitors like Walmart and Alphabet's Wing are advancing too - Walmart plans to reach 40 million customers by 2027. The drone delivery market shows significant growth potential.

6Regulatory hurdles and incidents

FAA certification posed major challenges as standards were designed for manned aircraft. In 2025, two drones collided with a crane in Arizona, causing a fire. A July 2024 crash occurred in the UK. Some test sites in California and Texas closed due to noise complaints. Amazon claims each drone generation is quieter.

7Organizational changes

In 2020, visionary founder Gur Kimchi was replaced by Boeing veteran David Carbon, signaling regulatory prioritization. This caused culture clashes and staff departures. Carbon rebuilt the team with robotics and autonomy experts. Amazon's hundreds of fulfillment centers give it a competitive edge in drone delivery.

8Future and competition

New York's mayor supports legislation requiring delivery drivers to be employees rather than contractors, potentially increasing costs and making drone investment more attractive. An FAA rule easing beyond-line-of-sight deliveries awaits approval. Drone deliveries could represent e-commerce's next major evolution.
