1Project Scope and Location

The Piódão Plaza and Tourist Office project covers a total area of 1767 square meters. Located in the Serra de Açor region of Portugal, the site serves as the primary entrance to the historic village. Branco-DelRio Arquitectos completed this public architecture intervention in 2022, focusing on the village's only flat, open space.

2Topographical and Material Context

Piódão is characterized by its steep slopes and traditional schist construction. The village layout resembles an amphitheater, featuring narrow, schist-paved streets that challenge modern accessibility. The project integrates into this rugged environment, respecting the existing architectural language while addressing the logistical needs of a remote, isolated community nestled within the mountain landscape.

3Strategic Urban Functionality

Largo Cónego Manuel Fernandes Nogueira acts as the central hub for the village. It facilitates the movement of residents, incoming tourists, and essential supply deliveries. By formalizing this space, the architects have created a structured transition zone that manages the high volume of visitors while maintaining the daily operational requirements of local residents.

4Design Team and Coordination

The project was coordinated by João Branco and Paula del Río of Branco-DelRio Arquitectos. The core project team included Marco Silva, who worked to balance public utility with aesthetic preservation. Their collaborative approach ensured that the new tourist office and plaza design remained consistent with the historical identity of the surrounding schist houses.

5Logistical Challenges of Isolation

The village's isolated location in the Serra de Açor necessitates precise planning for infrastructure projects. Deliveries and tourist traffic must navigate the limited space of the plaza, which is the only unobstructed area in the settlement. The design addresses these constraints by optimizing the flow of people and goods through the square.

6Visual Documentation and Records

The architectural documentation of the site was captured by Frederico Martinho and the collective do mal o menos. These photographs highlight the integration of the new structures within the existing schist urban fabric. The visual record serves as a primary reference for the project's completion in 2022 and its impact on the village.

7Public Architecture and Community

Categorized under public architecture and community development, the project emphasizes the role of design in supporting rural tourism. By providing a dedicated tourist office, the village can better manage visitor information and engagement. This intervention demonstrates how strategic architectural planning can support the economic and social sustainability of remote, heritage-rich locations.

8Impact on Village Infrastructure

The revitalization of the plaza provides a necessary upgrade to Piódão's infrastructure. By formalizing the main entrance, the project improves the experience for both residents and visitors. This development serves as a case study for balancing modern functional requirements with the preservation of traditional, geographically isolated architectural environments in rural Portugal.
