1Strategic Coalition Membership

SBI Holdings and Web3 developer Startale Group have joined the Open Standard coalition. This global initiative, supported by major entities like Visa, BlackRock, and Coinbase, seeks to build a unified settlement layer for the digital economy. The partnership marks a significant step in integrating Japanese financial institutions into broader blockchain-based infrastructure.

2Focus on Stablecoin Interoperability

The core objective is to establish technical interoperability between OUSD, a US dollar-denominated stablecoin, and JPYSC, a trust-type yen stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank. Both firms are initiating a joint proof-of-concept experiment to determine if these distinct assets can function seamlessly within a single cross-border settlement framework.

3Modernizing Foreign Exchange Rails

This collaboration aims to modernize traditional foreign exchange mechanisms by introducing faster, more efficient, and 24/7 settlement rails. By leveraging blockchain technology, the project seeks to replace legacy systems that often limit the speed of yen-dollar transactions, potentially reducing the friction currently associated with international trade and institutional capital movement.

4Regulatory Context and GENIUS Act

The initiative follows the passage of the US GENIUS Act, which provided a federal regulatory framework for stablecoin issuance and reserve management. This legislation has catalyzed institutional interest, encouraging banks and fintech firms to test how dollar- and yen-denominated tokens can streamline trade settlement within a defined, compliant legal environment.

5SBI's Expanding Digital Asset Portfolio

For SBI, this project builds upon its existing involvement with dollar-backed assets in Japan. The firm has previously supported tokens such as USDC and RLUSD, demonstrating a consistent strategy to integrate digital assets into its core financial services. This new alliance further solidifies their commitment to exploring blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

6Testing and Development Status

Both firms emphasized that the interoperability project remains strictly in the planning and testing phase. No official launch date has been announced, and commercial transaction rails between JPYSC and OUSD are not yet live. The current focus is entirely on establishing technical feasibility and evaluating potential cost efficiencies through rigorous testing.

7Growth of Open Standard Network

Since its concept announcement in June, the Open Standard coalition has expanded significantly. The network now includes over 200 financial institutions and fintech platforms, up from 140 participants. The framework promotes a model featuring fee-free minting and revenue sharing, which continues to attract diverse players looking to modernize their digital settlement capabilities.

8Future Implications for Settlement

If successfully implemented, this framework could enable institutions to settle yen-dollar transactions directly on blockchain infrastructure. However, the project must still overcome significant hurdles regarding technical feasibility, complex regulatory requirements, and proven cost efficiencies. The outcome of the upcoming proof-of-concept will be critical in determining the viability of this model.
