Crypto Experts Reject AI-Driven Cryptography Panic and Bunker Mode Strategy

Industry specialists argue moving crypto assets offers flawed protection against theoretical AI attacks.

1The AI Cryptography Debate

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake proposed that the industry prepare for bunker mode. He warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could discover classical mathematical attacks on elliptic curve cryptography. Drake recommended a controlled migration of digital assets to fresh addresses whose public keys have never been exposed onchain.

2Elliptic Curves Under Scrutiny

Drake argued that elliptic curves possess richer mathematical structure than hash functions, making them theoretically more vulnerable to AI-assisted discovery. Cryptography professor Matthew Green echoed concerns about public key viability. However, Coinbase cryptography head Yehuda Lindell stated that no evidence shows existing elliptic curve assumptions have weakened.

3Flaws in Bunker Isolation

Hardware wallet specialists identified serious operational gaps in the bunker mode proposal. FoundationHQ chief Zach Herbert explained that extended public keys shared with wallet applications already reveal unexposed address keys. Attackers could derive private keys directly if ECDSA breaks, bypassing hardware wallet protections completely without physical access.

4Systemic Infrastructure Risks

StarkWare chief executive Eli Ben-Sasson warned that broken cryptography extends beyond individual user wallets. Network consensus mechanisms, data blob polynomial commitments, and infrastructure-level validator signatures would fail simultaneously. Such fundamental breakage would trigger massive gas fee spikes across blockchains, rendering standard transaction recovery efforts practically impossible.

5Address Design Protection Variations

Different blockchain architectures handle public key exposure inconsistently across protocols. Bitcoin SegWit addresses conceal public keys behind cryptographic hashes until funds move, whereas Taproot and Solana expose keys by default. Trezor analyst Lucien Bourdon noted that spending Bitcoin inevitably reveals public keys in the mempool during broadcast.

6Network Post-Quantum Initiatives

Several networks are pursuing distinct cryptographic defense roadmaps independently. NEAR Protocol allows accounts to attach quantum-safe FIPS-204 keys in single transactions without transferring funds. Starknet uses native account abstraction to swap signature schemes flexibly, while Solana Foundation developed a hash-based migration proof-of-concept for its account layer.

7Ethereum Emergency Fallback Plans

Ethereum is drafting a long-term post-quantum transition utilizing hash-based signatures and zero-knowledge aggregation. Vitalik Buterin previously proposed an emergency hard fork mechanism to roll back blocks after mass theft events. Under that concept, users would reclaim lost assets through zero-knowledge proofs verifying original seed phrases.

8Operational Hazards of Rushing

Security analysts caution against uncoordinated asset migrations driven by speculative panic. Rushed transfers expose users to phishing scams, wallet misconfigurations, and dormant multisig complications. Bitwise and Trezor researchers emphasize that theoretical AI risks remain unproven, making sudden manual migrations far riskier than awaiting standard protocol upgrades.
