Eagle Luna chases off nest intruder as mom Jackie recovers
Family dynamics unfold as mother eagle Jackie heals.
1Mother eagle Jackie's recovery process
Despite being in critical condition at the Ojai Raptor Center, Jackie is eating on her own and appears more energetic. She is fighting off the staff, indicating she is in recovery. Her health condition remains uncertain, and specialist veterinarians are working to determine the best treatment.
2Shadow and the chicks' nest life
In Jackie's absence, Shadow is feeding and caring for the chicks Sandy and Luna while protecting the nest. Luna even chased away an intruder before it could enter the nest, assisting her father. Shadow is unlikely to seek another mate for now due to his long-term bond with Jackie.
3Eagles' hormonal cycle
Jackie's hormones kick in earlier, while Shadow's become active towards the end of December into early January. During this period, Shadow's behavior may change, but he makes his own decisions. FOBBV notes that predicting Shadow's actions is challenging.
4Jackie's accident
Jackie was critically injured in a fight with two adult eagles near Dana Point, leading to her being brought to the Ojai Raptor Center. She was found to be anemic and suffering from inflammation affecting her kidney function.
5Risk of lead poisoning
Lead is highly toxic to eagles. A fragment the size of a grain of rice can be lethal to a mature bald eagle. The Ojai Raptor Center is awaiting a toxicology report to determine if Jackie has lead, zinc, or rodenticide in her system.
6Nest cam and viewer interest
Jackie and Shadow's nest is livestreamed 24/7 by Friends of Big Bear Valley, captivating millions of viewers. The development of chicks Sandy and Luna is closely monitored via the nest cam, highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation.
