Eight serene cottage living room designs for rural escapes
Tranquil spaces blending natural materials from Scotland to Czechia
1Nature-integrated retreats
These eight cottages spanning from Scottish Highlands to Bohemian Forest merge contemporary design with traditional architecture. High ceilings, stone walls and expansive glazing invite natural light while framing landscapes. Architects aimed to preserve original structures' character while delivering modern comforts.
2Material authenticity
A common thread is their emphasis on local materials. Preserved stone floors in Purbeck Cottage, Douglas fir and clay plaster in Scottish Iorram, floor-to-ceiling glass in Poland's Plener Istebna - each choice roots the spaces in their geography. Material selections echo regional vernacular.
3Spatial fluidity
Living areas seamlessly connect to gardens through sliding doors, as seen in Studio Weave's Devon project. Carlton Cottage's rotating glass doors in Melbourne dissolve boundaries between indoors and lush Australian landscape. This design philosophy creates airy, open atmospheres.
4Transformative interventions
Hop Cottage's L-shaped extension in Kent opened up cramped Edwardian plans, while the Surrey-Hampshire border renovation reconfigured confined interiors. Mistovia's award-winning twin cottages in Polish mountains demonstrate thoughtful updates. Each project respects existing structures while offering transformative solutions.
5Signature details
Unique elements like Borová Lada's porthole-turned-window-seat, Iorram's bespoke fireplace referencing traditional cottages, or built-in Douglas fir window seats in Devon add character. These details bridge heritage aesthetics with contemporary functionality.
6Sustainable serenity
Curated from Dezeen's archive, this collection inspires those seeking refuge from urban chaos. Warm natural materials, airy openings and preserved historic fabric make these spaces both beautiful and functional. The designs promise sustainable, peaceful living through thoughtful architecture.
