MetOp-SG-B1 Weather Satellite Wakes Up for Launch Preparations
The advanced meteorological satellite is undergoing final checks in French Guiana before its launch.
1Satellite Activation Begins
The MetOp-SG-B1 satellite has been moved to a cleanroom at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. After a period in storage, engineers are now initiating the reactivation process. This phase marks the beginning of final technical checks and preparations for the spacecraft, which is scheduled for launch toward the end of this year.
2Transport and Storage Logistics
The satellite traveled from Bordeaux, France, aboard the sail-assisted vessel Canopée, arriving in Kourou on October 16. During its storage phase, the transport container maintained a strictly controlled environment. Engineers ensured the internal conditions remained dry, filled with nitrogen to prevent contamination, and kept at a constant temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
3Twelve Years of Development
The MetOp-SG-B1 project represents over 12 years of intensive development work. Enrico Corpaccioli from the European Space Agency described the removal from the protective container as a significant milestone for the engineering team. The staff is now focused on switching on the satellite systems to ensure all components function correctly before flight.
4Complementary Orbital Mission
Once operational in orbit, MetOp-SG-B1 will join its sibling satellite, MetOp-SG-A1, which was launched in August 2025. These two units carry complementary suites of instruments designed to provide high-resolution measurements. They track critical atmospheric and environmental variables, including temperature, precipitation, cloud formations, and wind patterns to improve global weather forecasting accuracy.
5Long-term Meteorological Strategy
The broader MetOp-SG mission is designed to ensure a continuous stream of meteorological data for more than 20 years. To achieve this longevity, the program comprises three successive pairs of satellites. This multi-generational approach allows for consistent climate research and monitoring, providing essential data continuity for scientists studying long-term environmental and atmospheric changes.
6Upcoming Launch Milestones
Over the next few weeks, the launch campaign will proceed through several critical milestones. The team will perform final system checks and complete the fuelling process for the satellite. These steps are essential to verify the integrity of the spacecraft before it is integrated with the Ariane 6 rocket for its final mission.
7Integration and Launch Pad
Following the final checks, MetOp-SG-B1 will be encapsulated within the fairing of its Ariane 6 launcher. This protective structure shields the satellite during the initial ascent through the atmosphere. Once encapsulated, the entire assembly will be transported to the launch pad to prepare for the final liftoff scheduled for late this year.
8Impact on Climate Research
The deployment of MetOp-SG-B1 is vital for enhancing both short-term weather forecasting and long-term climate research. By providing precise data on atmospheric variables, the mission supports global efforts to understand environmental shifts. The successful launch will solidify the European Space Agency's capability to monitor Earth's complex weather systems with unprecedented technical detail.
