1The Beginning of the Book Club

Crystal had been asked for years to start a book club but waited for the right time to launch it. Her sister Gretchen’s simple suggestion led to the idea of a monthly book reading and discussion. The club is designed to be flexible, with no obligations—participants can join for any month they choose. The first book selected for September is the historical fiction novel 'Lady Tan’s Circle of Women,' set in China.

2How the Club Works

At the start of each month, Crystal will announce the book choice on her blog and social media. Participants can buy the book, borrow it from a library, or listen to the audiobook. Throughout the month, Crystal may share thoughts on social media or her blog. At the end of the month, she’ll post a full review and invite participants to share their thoughts in the comments.

3September’s Pick: Lady Tan’s Circle of Women

The September selection is a historical fiction novel set during the Ming Dynasty. It tells the story of women’s struggles and solidarity in the field of medicine in China. The protagonist, Tan Yunxian, is a doctor specializing in women’s diseases, trained by her grandmother. The book highlights the power of female friendship and the fight against traditional societal norms. Crystal chose this book for its unique cultural and historical perspective.

4Flexibility and Participation

The book club is entirely flexible—participants can join for any month and skip others if they prefer. There are no strict rules or requirements. Crystal encourages borrowing books from libraries and shares that some titles may be available without waiting lists.

5Book Selection Criteria

Crystal aims to select books with 'clean' content—meaning no explicit scenes or excessive profanity. However, since she hasn’t read the books beforehand, she notes that her selection isn’t an endorsement. She’ll research to ensure books are roughly PG or PG-13 level.

6Participants’ Role

The club offers a platform for participants to actively share their thoughts. At the end of each month, everyone can discuss the book in the comments. Participants can also suggest future book picks, helping shape the club’s direction.

7Cultural and Historical Context

Lady Tan’s Circle of Women explores women’s roles in medicine and societal restrictions during the Ming Dynasty. It portrays their struggle to break free from traditional roles and the support they provide each other. Such books are valuable for readers interested in diverse cultures and historical periods.

8The Importance of the Book Club

Read With Crystal isn’t just about reading—it’s about building a community. Participants can enrich their experience by hearing diverse perspectives. Crystal hopes the club will make reading fun and accessible. Its success depends on active participation and engagement from members.
