Asian founders adopt bold globalization strategy with AI

AI-powered business models enable Asian startups to expand globally at unprecedented speed.

1Shift in global mindset among Asian founders

According to Stripe's latest report, Singapore-based AI companies enter an average of 7 new markets within their first year. This represents a radical departure from the traditional 'local market first' approach. Stripe's SEA MD Sarita Singh notes Asian firms now think globally before fully solidifying their business model. Previously, products were tested locally before gradual international expansion.

2AI companies outpace SaaS in growth

2025 data shows the top 100 AI companies on Stripe reached $1M annualized revenue in just 11.5 months - 4 months faster than the fastest-growing SaaS firms during the subscription boom peak. AI-native business models demonstrate clear advantages in both scaling and monetization compared to traditional software. Singh attributes this difference to AI's inherent characteristics.

3Asia's fragmented payments challenge

The biggest hurdle for Asian founders is navigating one of the world's most complex payment ecosystems. 'We're not a monolithic card market,' Singh explains, highlighting regional diversity. Local payment giants like Samsung Pay in Korea, Touch 'n Go in Malaysia, and GCash in Philippines require adaptation to different consumer behaviors. Stripe recently announced integrations with these platforms.

4Global access to local payment networks

Stripe's partnerships with local payment systems like Samsung Pay, ShopeePay and TrueMoney will enable businesses to accept cross-border payments through these platforms. 'These companies are successful on their own but gain global distribution with us,' says Singh. Multiple payment channels are particularly crucial for AI-powered business models.

5Emerging 'agentic economy' trend

Stripe launched its 'Agentic Commerce Suite' last December, allowing AI agents to shop on behalf of users. Early adopters include fashion brands like Coach and Kate Spade, plus e-commerce platforms like Etsy. The system enables secure identity transfer through shared payment tokens. Visa and Mastercard are developing similar solutions.

6Competing fintech moves

Visa unveiled its Intelligent Commerce platform in April 2026 for AI agent payments, while Mastercard launched 'Agent Pay for Machines' in June for machine-to-machine microtransactions. However, Singh notes the agentic economy remains in its infancy. Stripe is focused on preparing businesses for this transition in advance.

7Future-proofing tech investments

Singh emphasizes that companies must design their tech stacks not just for current needs but for the future agentic economy. 'You don't want to rebuild your system from scratch soon,' she warns. Stripe's solutions aim to provide flexibility for this transition, ensuring businesses won't need major overhauls later.

8New era in global entrepreneurship

This aggressive globalization strategy by Asian founders is fundamentally transforming traditional business approaches. The speed and scalability enabled by AI are rendering local boundaries obsolete, while fintech solutions like Stripe build the infrastructure for this transformation. The next 5 years are expected to see an explosion of companies born global.
