CLB Architects Completes Cantilevered Boomerang Residence in Wyoming

A 7,000-square-foot mountain home balances architectural precision with the rugged Wyoming landscape.

1Architectural Site Integration

CLB Architects designed a 7,000-square-foot residence perched on 41 acres of rugged Wyoming terrain. The structure utilizes a boomerang-shaped plan that folds into the mountainside to create a protected central courtyard. This geometry allows the home to sit lightly on the land while framing expansive views of the surrounding natural landscape.

2Duality in Spatial Design

The home features a dual-focus layout, balancing outward-facing vistas with inward-looking private spaces. The main level sits above a concrete plinth, establishing a clear division between public and private areas. Circulation paths are strategically arranged to guide residents through the home, centering activity around the kitchen and dining area.

3Active Lifestyle Amenities

Designed for an active family, the residence includes specialized zones for outdoor pursuits. A dedicated ski room features a floating fireplace and integrated seating near the garage. The lower level houses guest suites, a gym, and an infinity pool, all oriented to provide direct views toward one of North America’s highest peaks.

4Energy Efficiency Standards

The project prioritizes thermal performance through an energy-efficient air-source heat pump system. This technology reportedly consumes 30% less energy than conventional HVAC alternatives. Further efficiency is achieved through hydronic flooring, a highly insulated building envelope, and triple-paned windows, which collectively work to reduce long-term operational energy costs for the owners.

5Material Palette Selection

The interior and exterior materials create a tactile dialogue between architecture and the earth. Douglas fir flooring and ceilings, finished with a soft whitewash, contrast with blackened steel and board-formed concrete. This organic palette aims to evoke a modern chalet aesthetic while maintaining a sense of calm throughout the residence.

6Curated Interior Experience

Interiors function as a living gallery, featuring bespoke elements like a 20-foot-long kitchen island. A dichroic sculpture by artist Soo Sunny is suspended over the central staircase, serving as a focal point. Principal Sarah Kennedy emphasized an understated palette to allow architectural materials to remain quiet while highlighting artful furnishings.

7Landscape Blending Strategy

From across the valley, the residence’s shadowed wood exterior is designed to blend into the natural environment. The architectural team focused on keeping the building’s profile low to ensure the natural context remains the primary visual feature. This approach reflects a deliberate effort to minimize the home’s overall visual impact.

8Design Philosophy Outcomes

The Boomerang Residence demonstrates how precision engineering can coexist with rugged topography. By prioritizing site-specific geometry and sustainable building systems, the project achieves a balance between luxury and environmental restraint. This residence stands as a case study in modern mountain architecture, emphasizing connection to the land through thoughtful, understated design choices.
