Allprace's Hargis House in LA: Warm Living Space with Natural Materials

Hargis House reflects the harmony of wood and stone as a modern interpretation of biophilic design.

1Concept of Warmth and Permanence

Allprace studio aimed to create a sense of 'warmth and permanence' in the Hargis House located in Culver City. The client prioritized understated luxury, exceptional craftsmanship, and an art-centered lifestyle. Built on the site of a former house, the project consists of a main residence and a detached unit. The design team avoided excess to create a calming atmosphere through thoughtful material selection and spatial organization.

2Material Choices and Details

The main residence features facades clad in wood and light-toned brick. Limestone flooring graces the ground level, while herringbone-patterned wood floors adorn the upper level. The kitchen boasts a travertine island and white oak cabinetry. A Bocci chandelier from its 14 Series hangs above the spiral staircase. Custom millwork and expansive glazing contribute to the home's distinctive character.

3Architectural Highlights

The most striking architectural element is the 14x20 foot triangular window that floods interiors with natural light while creating a sculptural focal point visible from both inside and outside. A cantilever shades the in-ground pool. Following biophilic design principles, the selection of stone, wood, and living plants establishes a strong connection between the built environment and nature.

4Interior Layout

The ground floor houses an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area. The upper level contains bedrooms and a den designed for more private use. The backyard features a guest house and a small swimming pool partially sheltered by the structure's upper level. Careful attention to material textures showcases exceptional craftsmanship throughout the residence.

5Contextual Harmony

Located in Culver City's creative district, the project supports a walkability-centered lifestyle. Built to replace an aging house and two-car garage, the structure complements the surrounding natural context. Designers Shanty and James Mulyadi prioritized materials that convey permanence. The house reflects Allprace's philosophy of defining luxury through material integrity rather than excess.

6Other Notable Projects in the Area

Culver City hosts other innovative residential designs including FreelandBuck's courtyard-style house and Edward Ogosta's bungalow renovation with angled roof extensions. The area has become known for pushing boundaries in contemporary housing. Within this context, Hargis House stands as an exemplary model addressing modern living needs. Photography by Gavin Cater captures the project's essence.

7Design Philosophy

Allprace redefines luxury through material integrity and craftsmanship rather than ostentation. Every detail in Hargis House was carefully considered to create a serene living environment. Natural materials selected following biophilic principles strengthen indoor-outdoor continuity. Special elements like the Bocci 14 Series chandelier add artistic flair. The design demonstrates how contemporary homes can achieve timeless appeal.

8A Model for Modern Living

Hargis House exemplifies effective use of natural materials in contemporary residential design. It pioneers the creation of sustainable, aesthetic living spaces in walkable neighborhoods. Representing a design language beyond fleeting trends with its emphasis on permanence, the project enriches Culver City's architectural identity. Allprace's work contributes meaningfully to discussions about quality living environments in urban contexts.
