Gamified designs are transforming pediatric healthcare

Innovative design turns medical treatment into play for young patients.

1A new approach in medical design

Replacing the cold appearance of traditional medical devices, designers are creating solutions that align with children's natural learning and play processes. From inhalers transformed into toys to prosthetics resembling superhero accessories, these designs make treatment experiences more enjoyable while maintaining clinical effectiveness.

2Play as healthcare strategy

The Ringo pediatric IV stand, shaped like a sailboat, turns medical equipment into a movable toy that children can push through hospital corridors. Such designs address the psychological impact of clinical environments by integrating play into routine medical procedures, transforming necessary treatments into engaging experiences.

3Creative respiratory solutions

The Easy GOOSE inhaler, designed in the shape of a friendly goose, helps children with chronic respiratory conditions interact with familiar forms. Similarly, the Peppy device for cystic fibrosis patients incorporates playful interactions into repetitive therapies, demonstrating how design can alleviate the tedium of long-term treatments.

4Reducing pre-diagnosis anxiety

The Oneiro interactive device, resembling a conch shell, converts each breath into evolving digital landscapes while children wait for sleep apnea tests. This innovative approach transforms waiting periods into creative activities, significantly reducing the emotional stress associated with medical procedures.

5Inclusive play experiences

Bubble Braille's tactile controls, inspired by Braille alphabet, enable visually impaired children to participate in gaming alongside sighted peers. By making accessibility a foundational design principle rather than an afterthought, this project creates shared play experiences across different sensory abilities.

6Personalizable medical tech

Penn State's conductive ink technology allows medical electrodes to be painted as sharks, superheroes or abstract shapes using food coloring. This breakthrough turns electrode application into a face-painting activity, encouraging children's active participation in their treatment while fundamentally reimagining healthcare experiences.
