1Formation of BankChain Alliance

Thirty-nine US state banking associations have established the BankChain Alliance to develop an industry-owned blockchain network targeting a 2027 launch. The network will support smart payment tools, tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and automated settlement. BankChain announced plans to make the network interoperable with other blockchains and is currently selecting a technology partner to facilitate this integration.

2Participating institutions and structure

The alliance represents thousands of financial institutions across the US. BankChain intends to invite nationwide banks to take ownership stakes in the network. However, the announcement didn't specify which individual banks have committed to joining or detail the network's governance and funding models. These uncertainties raise questions about the project's implementation timeline and operational framework.

3Other US banking networks

BankChain joins several bank-led networks announced or advanced since late 2025. Major, regional, and community banks are building shared infrastructure to move deposits and payments onchain within the regulated banking system. In June, The Clearing House announced an onchain money initiative supported by JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and other major financial institutions.

4Advantages of tokenized deposits

Unlike independently issued stablecoins, tokenized deposits represent claims on individual banks while maintaining their status as commercial bank money. This structure allows banks to offer programmable, 24/7 transfer capabilities while keeping customer funds on their balance sheets. The innovation effectively bridges traditional banking with blockchain technology, creating new possibilities for financial services.

5Regional banks' Cari network

Regional lenders are pursuing a separate network through Cari, developed by Huntington and First Horizon. Cari launched its minimum viable product in March and had attracted over 30 participating banks by July. This network aims to facilitate regional banks' adoption of blockchain technology, particularly for interbank transactions and settlement processes.

6Community banks' DTX Consortium

Community banks formed the DTX Consortium through the Independent Bankers Association of Texas. IBAT reported in June that membership exceeded 50 banks as the group prepared a tokenized-deposit pilot program. This initiative enables smaller financial institutions to participate in the blockchain revolution without requiring massive individual investments in technology infrastructure.

7Stablecoin consortium models

Stablecoin developers are also adopting consortium approaches. Open Standard named over 140 payments, banking, technology, and crypto companies in connection with Open USD, a dollar-backed stablecoin expected to launch in late 2026. The project plans to offer businesses fee-free minting and redemption while distributing reserve earnings to participating companies, creating a shared economic model.

8Transformation of financial infrastructure

The US banking sector is reshaping financial infrastructure with blockchain-based solutions. Initiatives like BankChain aim to bridge traditional banking with innovative technologies. This transformation could significantly improve payment system efficiency and enhance financial inclusion. However, regulatory compliance and standardization challenges remain critical hurdles that need resolution for widespread adoption across the banking industry.
