German and US architects to renovate German House in New York
German consulate building gets a sustainable and modern design makeover.
1Project initiation
German architecture firm Sauerbruch Hutton and US-based Studio Gang have been selected to renovate German House in New York. The 325-foot tall skyscraper was originally designed by SLCE Architects in the 1990s and houses the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany. The jury-selected team will refurbish the building's facade and interior spaces.
2Design approach
The new design features a facade with colored bands that will brighten the current gray appearance. The team aims to showcase German engineering's sustainable construction techniques to a global audience. Studio Gang founding partner Jeanne Gang emphasized that the project represents an opportunity centered around cultural exchange.
3Sustainable features
Photovoltaic panels will be integrated into the building's facade, along with a box-window system providing solar shading. This system will also allow for natural ventilation. All these interventions will be implemented while maintaining the high security standards required for a diplomatic building.
4Interior innovations
A 'sky lobby with vertical garden' will be created at the mid-level of the building, serving as a meeting point for the Consulate General and UN mission. The upper floors will feature a restaurant opening onto a shaded garden area. All interior spaces will undergo complete renovation.
5Environmental benefits
The team highlights the carbon footprint advantages of renovating rather than building new. Sauerbruch Hutton partner Lina Lahiri stated that careful transformation will extend the building's lifespan by decades. This approach also aims to enhance interdepartmental interaction within the consulate.
6Architects' first US project
German House will be Sauerbruch Hutton's first project in the United States. Studio Gang will bring its New York experience to the project. The team expressed excitement about combining German design expertise with New York's project delivery capabilities.
7Other Manhattan renovation projects
Recent significant projects in Manhattan include SOM's renovation of the iconic Lever House and Vocon Architects with MdeAS Architects' refurbishment of Eero Saarinen's Black Rock building. The German House renovation is seen as this trend extending to diplomatic buildings.
8Project significance
The German House renovation aims to set a model for sustainable diplomatic architecture. The project will offer more welcoming and eco-friendly architecture for the international diplomatic community while showcasing innovative approaches of German engineering.
