Office Building for Electrical Switches Company in Vijayawada
Studio UF+O designs a headquarters blending with India's historic urban fabric.
1Project Location and Purpose
Screened Space serves as the headquarters and experience center for an electrical switches company, located in the historic core of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The project responds to a complex urban context characterized by narrow streets, exposed infrastructure, and tightly packed buildings. The architects aimed to provide an innovative architectural solution to these challenging conditions.
2Urban Design Context
Vijayawada's dense historic fabric directly influenced the project's design. In this area where buildings stand almost without gaps between them, Studio UF+O developed a design balancing visibility, climate control, and privacy. Spanning 8,600 square feet, the project successfully harmonizes with its surroundings while establishing a distinctive identity.
3Architectural Features and Materials
The building stands out with its contemporary use of steel and concrete. The design team, led by architects Prachi Parekh and Vineet Vora, combined the company's functional needs with local architectural traditions. As the project also serves as an 'experience center,' it includes interactive spaces for visitors.
4Climate Control and Visual Privacy
In the dense urban fabric, sun control and privacy are crucial. The design incorporates specific solutions for these needs. Screening systems maximize natural light while blocking unwanted views. This approach creates a comfortable working environment for office employees.
5Design Team and Process
The design team included experienced professionals like Aishwarya Gaitonde. Collaborating with local authorities, the team explored ways to preserve the historic fabric while designing a modern business center. Throughout the process, the architectural character of surrounding buildings was carefully analyzed and harmonized with the new structure.
6Photographic Documentation
Photographer Vivek Eadara documented the project. The photographs reveal the building's relationship with its complex urban context and architectural details. Particularly noticeable are the changing appearances of the building under different daylight conditions throughout the day.
7Intersection of Industrial Design and Architecture
Designed for an electrical switches company, the building combines industrial design principles with architecture. Spaces displaying the company's products are integrated with office functions. This approach aims to offer a unique experience for both employees and visitors.
8Sustainable Office Design in India
The project serves as an example of sustainable office design in India's rapidly developing cities. This building, which preserves historic fabric while accommodating modern functions, could inspire similar projects. Scheduled for completion in 2026, it aims to contribute to the region's architectural identity.
