Bryan Young's Design World and the Dominican Republic
A journey at the intersection of architecture and art.
1First Steps in Architecture
Born in Los Angeles, Bryan Young has been fascinated by buildings since childhood. The works of Louis Kahn ignited his passion for architecture, which he turned into a profession by studying at Berkeley and Harvard.
2Founding Young Projects
Founded in 2010 in New York, Young Projects studio stands out with its material use and unique production techniques. Techniques like handmade plaster and crystal growing result in original designs.
3The Art of Alexander Girard
Bryan Young was captivated by Alexander Girard's 1972 piece 'Blue Triangles.' This artwork inspired the design of the Glitch House project in the Dominican Republic, showcasing how art can intertwine with architecture.
4Van Gogh's Roses
Raina Lee's ceramic piece inspired by Van Gogh's 'Roses' holds a special place in their Brooklyn home. This work highlights the timeless impact of art and the value of craftsmanship.
5Childhood Memories
Bryan Young's childhood memories shaped his design philosophy. The parrot figurine inherited from his grandmother and Kenner's Millennium Falcon illustrate how nostalgia and pop culture influence design.
6The Magic of Playa Grande
Playa Grande in the Dominican Republic became a source of inspiration for Bryan Young. The natural landscape here reminded him that architectural design must harmonize with nature.
7Architecture and Nature
The main house in Playa Grande translates nature's rhythm into architecture. The roof, composed of 160 scissor trusses, mimics the forest's dynamic geometry and engages in a dialogue with nature.
8Concerts and Inspiration
Bryan Young experienced his first post-pandemic concert with The Flaming Lips. This experience reminded him of art's power to bring people together and its inspiration for architecture.
9The Future of Design
Bryan Young's work showcases the potential of combining architecture and art in the future. Nature, nostalgia, and craftsmanship form the cornerstone of his designs.
